What do you want to accomplish by slowing it down? There may be several ways depending upon exactly what you mean by slowing it down.

Sid, I want a glow plug to ignite it and the cotton to burn slower in order to ignite smoke powder. What seems to happen is that the cotton burns so fast without igniting the smoke powder.

Lou,
As I understand it, your problem is not so much how to slow down flash cotton. It is how to cause a glow plug to light smoke powder. You might try using the glow plug to ignite a very small quantity of black gunpowder which will, in turn, ignite the smoke powder. If this doesn't work, let me know. There are several other possibilities. Sid

Sid, many thanks for your advice. I solved the problem by increasing the voltage of the glow plug from 3V to 9V. No need for the flash cotton.

You are shortening the life of that glow plug by putting 9volts to it.
One day you are going to be performing and it's not going to work, because you have burned out the element. Why don't you just use flash paper? It burns much slower than cotton. Randi |

I may be off base here but I think you may need slow burn flash cotton just for smoke powder. Check the web I have some and it works fine. I would tell you where I got it but I cant remember. Good luck Magic Tad

First what do you want the smoke to do.linger evap fast and so on.the flash pot is not hot enough for the smoke powder to work. first off use a small amount of smoke powder with slow burning flash cotton,as it needs some good amount of heat to get going like a charcol block.by the way its not too great to breathin that sort of smoke.
I have listed two sites that sell slow flash cotton. http://www.mooncostumes.com/item/9391?ii......26+Decor http://www.gagfly.com/item/9389 |

Try placing a wadded up ball of flash PAPER in the flash powder. Then light the cotton as you have been doing. The cotton will ignite the paper which will burn long enough to light the powder (try different size balls of flash paper until you get what you are looking for.)

Wrap the powder IN the flash paper.. like a little bundle. Then place the flash cotton on top. The quickness of the cotton lights the paper and the paper lights the powder.
