Ah, my personal view. In term of audience viewing, gimmicked or no gimmicked, they won't know. So if you are going to make a interesting show that won't take out half your life, I feel go ahead with the gimmicked jackets. You still can hand out for simple inspection.
As for real regulation jackets, the cool thing is, its real, so you can perform this stunt by requiring the hospital to bring theirs, which prove the credibility you have. Or you can really hand it out for REALLY close inspection. Also, there are various type of jackets that can cause a lot of difficulty when you attempt to escape, which means, if you are going to do a real one, you got to research and try on and see what can you do. I personally have a real one, a real transparent one, and a gimmicked one. The real transparent one is the toughest to escape I have, because its PVC, its very heavy and tough, It take more than half my life to escape. LOL! |

I always preferred a regulation Posey straightjacket, but there are good arguments for each. DavidKim is correct that if you sell it correctly to the audience, the only difference may be in the convenience factor for a "less stressful" escape, allowing the escapologist to concentrate more on the performance and less on the actual straining to release.
As a second thought, I respect the choice of a straightjacket for any escapologist or a magician who wants to add an escape to his/her act, but everyone does realize that they are not used widely by mental health or prisons anymore for restraint or transport of inmates? Deemed too inhumane. Straightjackets are certainly are still used widely by magicians, with startling regularity of routine and escape jokes/moves. As a perceived restraint device, unless one is doing an historical escape style act, is the straightjacket becoming obsolete--or perhaps antiquated as a better choice of words--as an escape device? |

I don't normally say this, but please do a search on this topic before Chance body slams you. Or Ken threatens to staple you to various body parts of his you don't want to be stapled to... Just ask Dave, he's currently struggling to escape the effects of curry night in a Wendy house!!!
In all seriousness this topic has been discussed almost on a monthly basis and most, if not all of what you're looking for, will be found in those threads.
