Article about the russian mathematician who solved the conjecture and his knockback of the $1 million prize money.
You have to keep your eyes open for this stuff, I remember when I was a year late finding out that the 'lost' Mayan glyph language had been deciphered.

What an idiot.
If there is a single truth about Magic, it is that nothing on earth so efficiently evades it.

I remember when he published his work on the web 4 years ago. What a guy!

Two beautiful mathematical documentaries are “Fermat’s Last Theorem” and “Dangerous Knowledge”.

The director, Simon Singh wrote a very nice and approachable companion book called "Fermat's Enigma." It's a very nice read. What I particularly liked about "The Proof" was how it showed the human side of mathematicians. Seeing and hearing Wiles gently weep as he talks about his life's work is one of the greatest moments in documentary film, IMO. John

Thanks for that link, Tommy - and I agree with Magnus, very moving moment with Wiles.
And I forgot to add the link to Cracking the Mayan Code, which is also well worth a look.

In case you missed it in the post about the mayan playing cards, here is the link to the entire Nova episode about Cracking the Mayan Code. Fascinating stuff. In many ways, it reminds me of the efforts to crack Egyptian heiroglyphics.
