I was just looking at the Mikame Flag-Staff (from the Prestige Collection line), and I was wondering if anyone here owns one, and if so, how durable does it seem to you?
Overall it seems like a good deal with the silk included. Unless of course it's likely to break after some use, in which case it would suddenly become very expensive. Any feedback would be great - thanks! |

I've seen flagtastick before and the effect is really nice. Unfortunately it wouldn't work out so well for my purposes, since I need something really big (which is why the Mikame flag with the 6ftx6ft silk would work very well).
I'm also considering the Abbotts flagstaff, although it's rather on the expensive side. |

It would still be a one-man production. Flagtastick is really a blendo effect by itself, but the principle can be used for producing flags. The benefit over the flagstaff is that the production does not require a tossing motion.

I sold my Abbott's ancient brass and replaced it with a Mikame (on my for sale list under tricks for sale -- Lets Make A Deal - below.
I have found the Mikame an easier prop to handle in live performance and rugged unless you get crazy hitting things with it like a baseball bat --- which would even effect the Abbott's. The silk opens beautifully and floats its color exceptionally well. Folding it is easy. Look under my silks section.

The one problem I find with the Mikame flagstaff is that it will not hold up with a heavier silk. the one with Mikame staff is only 5 momme. That will not hold up over the long haul.

Thanks very much for all the help
That could be a problem about the silk not lasting. How long do you think it would generally be good for it taken care of? (i.e. would it be something like a year, or more like 5 to 10 years?). The Mikame is about half the price of the Abbott's flagstaff, so even if I had to change the silk twice I should be ahead. However if I needed to change it 7 or 8 times, then obviously the Abbott's staff would be a far better deal. Thanks again! |

While the lighter silk seems more fragile I found with any care it lasts -- and floats with less effort than the heavier momme I used on my Abbott's. But that is true with a lot of things -- I have seen guys ruin six footers by flinging them around live flame --- watched others wash and leave them piled wet -- and more importantly -- not take time to properly fold and handle for showing.
But -- in one way I agree with Dick -- heavier well cared for silks will last longer -- BUT -- in another way as you point out you can get two for one. With care --2 should last longer, "float" better -- and that is why I switched originally. The one I have for sale in the Lets Make A deal section under silks on my list -- is in veritably new condition.

Is the Abbots staff the one with multiple eyelets? I have a staff I purchased used from an older member, but he had no paperwork and couldn't remember the manufacturer - although he remembered the original price being near $200.
I ask because I'm looking for tips on use. One thing I've noticed is I have to be extremely careful with the eyelets and the leading strings to the silks. The eyelets want to rotate and when they do, the flag gets all tangled up and doesn't extend properly. I can sleefe the staff nicely; however, movement may cause the eyelets to rotate, so I haven't yet incorporated it into my act although I would LOVE to. Any advice or insight is more than welcome.

The eyelets twisting are caused by improper folding of the silk. You must pleat carefully and fold the silk.
I understand what Greg said about the floating of the thinner silk. It is a preference thing. I like the heavier silk as it seem more saturated because of more thread weight. Most flag staffs have mutiple eyelets. Than can be Abbott's, Gen Grant's or India or others. Richard
