Hello All -
I'm a beginner putting together a simple CD Manipulation routine for a friend's show. I know what tricks I want to do, and roughly in order. However, I am having trouble finding music that goes well w/ it. For the CD manipulators out there, do you start with the music, and then align the tricks to it? Or do you start with the tricks, and align the music to it? Thanks ahead of time. |

It's been my experience that you should master the routines first the way you want them to be and then edit the music around them. Otherwise you trying to modify YOUR effects to fit the music and the routine suffers. That goes for just about any type of act with a musical background.

Hey, for my Cd routine I took the time to learn all the moves I could regardless if I will use them in my routine. Then I went and listened to a bunch of music that MIGHT be a possibility.
For me I can picture different routines just from hearing music. I get a idea in my head from a song then go about putting the methods to do what I had in visioned. This is by no means the end of the creating process but more so a place to start. After I have a starting routine I then go back and work on perfecting it. As I do so I usually drop and add parts to it. Once you do this and come to a point where your happy with it, more then likely it will no longer match up to the music you first used. This is ok, in fact, now you can go and edit the music to fit or you can now do your search for a more permanent song. this is all on me and I know most people wont agree but this has worked and my CD routine is what I am always asked to do. Hope something I said helped! - Marc Hamel |

Hi Marc/Dave - thanks for the great advice. That makes sense that I should first come up w/ all the tricks that I'd want to do in a routine before making it match w/ the music.
I have also been watching a much youtube video's and all the music seem to be electronic - I guess this just seems to match CD manipulation better for some reason? Also, I have gone through the DVDs that I could find (Laser Anywhere / Show Off). Are there any more resources that I should look at? (besides other's youtube videos) |

The DVD title is: Show Off with CD's by Eddy Ray.
I did see a post somewhere here in MagicCafe that reviewed the DVD. |

Not sure who Eddy Ray is but here you can find the DVD and a few other CD tricks of his own.
