I had it happen again tonight for the second time.
Performed Extreme Burn and had a lady grab at the hundreds. They fell to the ground and I was able to recover them. After this happened the first time, I swore I would keep at least two feet between me and the spectator. This lady had seen me perform this before and wanted me to perform it for a guest she had there. It was tight quarters. I proceeded to grant her wish from about 18 inches away. BAM, when they changed to hundreds she grabbed them like a hawk grabbing a baby bunny. It's a crying shame that we can't perform this right under their noses. I'm sure we usually can, but once in a while you will get a grabber. BEWARE - Grabbers lurk out there in the real world. When you least expect it, it can happen to you. I have been reminded again that it is best to keep 24 to 36 inches between me and the spectators when changing bills to hundreds. Sammy

Don't you think that has a lot to do with audience management? Because it never ever happened to me. Sure you have to decide for which people you are going to perform it, but I personally think it is on us, that such things don't happen. There are many great books that deal with that topic: Strong Magic, Maximum Entertainment etc. Take care

I absolutely agree Matt. I allowed myself to perform this while I was "boxed in" to a small space. It was happy hour, the wine was flowing, the room was crowded, I was asked to perform, and I made the mistake of doing Extreme Burn (because it is so strong). I should have refused the request.
It would have been wiser to pull out a coin and do a one coin routine. Live and learn!

There is a certain sub-category of personality disorder that is somehow compelled to snatch the props from the hands of magicians, often before the routine is completed. They are endowed with incredible speed and should be considered extremely dangerous. They do this with no warning beforehand and are capable of leaping great distances. By the time you hear them shout "Lemme see that!" it's too late. Although this is an extremely rare occurance, they present no outward characteristicss that could prepare us in advance for an attack.
We are utterly defenseless. Heavan help us all. NOTE: This disorder should not be confused with girls who tear Magic Ding Dongs apart. That is simply an embarrasment reaction.

I think 2.0 could help in this situation.
"The New York Papers," Mark Twain once said,"have long known that no large question is ever really settled until I have been consulted; it is the way they feel about it, and they show it by always sending to me when they get uneasy. "

That is why I use one's to five's. I had the "grabbers" try too much with the higher denomination. Plus I like NOT having to worry too much when it is time to hand out the bills. I have received the same applause with the fives as I did before. Yes the Hundreds are a very nice "flash" but I just feel more comfortable with the five's. Now of course when "Lefty" and "Louie" are around I use the Hundreds because I feel more "secure". Hey it's just business.

I had this happen at a gas station. The cashier I performed it for snatched at the bills but we both had a firm grip on the bills she finally let go and I let her have it. I told her "that's five hundred bucks you know!!! I wouldn't even think about grabbing money out of your hand!! I'd probably be arrested." Then she realized what she had done and was embarassed. I just put everything away and stated how I hated performing for people just like her and left.

I actually LOVE performing for the "Grabbers". They are the ones that you just fried with the effect. They are not trying to steal your money---they are just so shocked they want to see if the bills are fake. Trust me as you perform this more and more I believe you will go to the five's as well. I've had bills rip as they were pulled. But live and learn as they say. This is a great effect.

I have performed this hundreds of times for spectators and only had two grabbers.
I just can't bring myself to go to ones to fives. My favorite line is "If you were a magician and you had five ones, what would you do with them?" The answer is often "Multiply them", but juat as often the answer is "Turn them into hundreds". With either answer, when they see the ones turn to hundreds, the response is incredible. If you can't use hundreds because of economic conditions, I certainly understand that. But if you can afford to have them tied up in this effect (you aren't spending them, just saving them with no interest earnings!) then I feel that the hundreds provide a WOW factor that can't be matched by using lesser denominations. Cheers! Sammy

I actually use both. But on the street I use only the one's to five's. Once I made the hundred dollar gimmick I didn't want to risk it ripping so I just kept it and will use it only at actual home performances. Although there is no sure thing there either I at least have some walls and doors to slow them down should they decide to "take the money and run". But if you watch closely I believe you will see you really do get the same response with 5's however the 100's will get that "Wow that's a lot of money!" response and it seems to make people talk more. As I said I do both and even toyed with the idea of playing so people will say something like "Sure you turned them into five's but what about 100's?" Then I'd be set just pull out my 100's gimmick and there it is. I have been thinking about that for some time as I have had people ask things of that nature. If I do I'll let you know how it goes. My main point that I wanted to make is if you are holding off making the gimmick because you don't the hundreds saved I say make it with the 5's because it does still garner a great reaction.
Good magic to all, Eric Btw I do quite a bit of bar entertaining and sometimes people are a little fuzzy in their thinking and that is the main reason I decided on going with 5's. So as we all do anyway look at the audience that you will be performing for and adjust accordingly. |

Good points, Eric. If I was working on the street, I would probably stick with fives, tens or twenties.
I also have a set that is ones to twenties. I also have knocked around the idea of turning the ones to twenties, back to ones, then to hundreds. Let me know if you come up with a good gimmick switch. Sammy

If I was in a bar I would use fives too. Too many quarky people out there. There is no respect for personal belongings anymore.

I compromise and change five $1's to $20's. I perform a mis-made bill routine first and inevitably someone asks if I can turn it into $100. I then pull out the five $1 bills and turn it into $100. I've never had a grabber with the twenties, and by showing the bills individually before and after it takes away their need to examine them. I always have people ASK if they can keep them, though!

The concept is great, but the mismade bills don't have a border, so I'm not sure I can pull it off. I will play with it. I decided to call it "Extreme Screw Up". Ones to Oops! Not sure it's practical, but great thinking on Loren's part! Sammy

When I am in a situation where grabbing is a possibility, I go the other way- and end with ones. It can be quite funny, especially using the theme that you borrow a twenty that you are going to turn into a hundred, but the magic goes astray ...

I'm toying with another idea where you ask people if they were a magician what would they turn these ones into? Fives, tens---hundreds? When they say they would---show them what that would look like by changing them into a five, ten, twenty, fifty and a hundred dollar bill. I have not done this yet but I can see it in my mind and I think it would look great. I'd like to know what you guys think.
