Our very own Café member Andy Walker has a really nice routine with Rocky Raccoon (Similar "down under" creature) and Sammy Smith's "Rabbit in the Hat".
I don't know if he sells his DVD with these routines on them. It might be worth your effort to ask him, if he would part with the homemade DVD for $15! I personally think he should market it!

When I was a teenager I met Jeff Justice at conventions and he blew me away with his hilarious -original-Rocky Routine (and everyone else) .
He was selling them and I bought one-like everyone else and never learned to make it move like he did. Years later I joined Magic Masters-Ken Fletcher's chain of magic shops-I pitched Rocky over the counter for 2.5 years-that's when I learned to do Rocky. The more I sold-the bigger my paycheck. I was motivated! I was taught by the king of the raccoon pitch Dennis Sowers. He was -and still is-the BEST Rocky handler I've ever seen. You really thought you were watching a living creature in his hands. Hilarious! He along with Jeff Justice and Mike Abston were Ken Fletcher's original pitchmen. They developed the Rocky pitch and created many of the moves and gags that everyone-including myself-does today. The routine I do is basically the Magic Masters pitch with a sprinkling of original stuff on top. The card routine with the spectators that I've done on TV is original with me. If you ever get a chance to see Dennis, Mike or Jeff work the raccoon you'll see that the are the true "Kings of Springs!" Dave |

David Blaine should do Rocky with a big sewer rat he meets on the street.
Now that's entertainment! Dr Magic |

If you add Rocky to a Wolf Magic Waky Wakoon box I think you can have a very nice added routine!
This is one of the most funny Rocky Raccoon videos I have ever seen watch the very end just so funny: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y17Cok9D6h0&feature=related |

Jeff Justice now does public speaking engagements plus te teaches a how to course on stand up comedy in atlanta. He did a great routine with Rocky. I learned from Dennis Sowers & Mike Abston, 2 of the best.

I worked with Jeff and Ken at a small Magic Masters shop at the Omni in Atlanta in '79 or so. Dennis was working for them in the Virgin Islands selling magic to cruise ship passengers. Jeff was terrific with Rocky, but I agree that Dennis was tops. I don't believe I ever met Mike but I may have and just don't remember. I combined stuff I learned from Jeff and Dennis into my Rocky pitch and I was pretty good, but never was as good as either of them. Hated the "boogie boogie" that Ken did.

I also worked at Magic Masters, with Ken Fletcher in the mid 80's. This was at the Hilton Hotel. I agree, Dennis Sowers is the best manipulator of Rocky I have ever seen. He trained me and many others.
I think it was David Williamson or Jeff Justice who wrote the manual that comes with the Rocky Raccoon. It's a good manual, and worth reading. Of course, practicing is vital with Rocky, especially in front of a mirror or a video camera. The spring is usually stiff at first, so practicing helps to loosen it. Rocky will shed soon after it's unwrapped. This is temporary. To speed up the shedding process, shake it a lot and also use a vacuum or hair dryer to get rid of the excess fur. Also, you'll probably need to trim the fur a bit, especially around the face & eyes. When buying one, try to see as many as you can. Each one is different, so look for one with the best tail, shape, face, etc. I prefer longer tails. |
