I hesitated posting this for two reasons, first there isn't really any information on this project yet and second I didn't want to have to figure out how to spell his last name.
In my opinion, Vanishing Inc. has quietly been releasing some of the strongest magic to come out in the past year or so. I noticed today if you click "coming soon" on their site it indicates a new "publication" from John G. called One Degree. I was hoping maybe John, Josh Jay or Andi Gladwin could give us a little more information on the project as I know there are a lot of John G fans who will be looking forward to this. |

I'm a fan of John G's work, so I wrote Joshua Jay about this. With his permission, here is the response:
"John G is, in our opinion, one of the most clever magicians on the scene today. He is a rare ability to combine principles and routines synergistically, where each part contributes to the whole. If you follow his work, you know what I'm talking about. Anyway, he is someone I've wanted to work with, so we've been very hard at work on his first hardbound book. John G authored it (did a fabulous job) and almost all the material will be new. I'm also excited about the layout. Between John G and Andi (both with backgrounds in graphic design), the book looks gorgeous...like something out of a bookstore. There will be some essays and a lot of card material, and I'm THRILLED that we can present it to people. We filmed John doing an incredible piece that we will release as a download, and his book will follow. No time frame as of now. We're knee deep in Rune Klan stuff, and we're going to focus on that for a bit".

Vanishing Inc does allow downloads now. You get a copy burned with your name in the corner.

John,
Are the downloads pulled from effects in One Degree or is it separate material altogether? |

John,
I'm really looking forward to the new book. You have a cunning mind and I can't wait to see what you have in store for us. I remember the download tricks being shot at Magic Live. I still remember your straw trick from that weekend, good stuff man! luke |

Hey Luke. Miss ya, man.
I should have hyped up the video downloads by saying that the famous Luke Dancy from Chris Angel's Mindfreak was there! Fun times. Glad you're excited about One Degree. Bannon and Carpenter wrote amazing intros. Putting finishing touches on it now. Hope all is well in Vegas...and hope to see you soon. John G

John G's One Degree is going to raise eyebrows. It's that rare book that demonstrates all the things we love about someone's work but also takes you somewhere new. I see a real progression in his thinking in this book, and Andi and I are LOVING the new material (and being the only ones doing it for a few fleeting months).
There are few good magicians but fewer good magic writers. I knew John was a great magician, creator, and thinker, but One Degree proves he is also a skillful, humble writer, and his personality really comes across on the page, particularly in his five essays. The layout of the book is beautiful, thanks to Mr Andi Gladwin, and I am so excited about its upcoming release. No release date set yet, but "soon." All the best, Josh |

John Guastaferro's magic is so cool. I feel his idea is in the same class with Jack Carpenter and Darwin ortiz. Just hope this book can be achieved from murphy.

Looks like it's ready to be preordered!
One Degree "I am excited about this book...This collection oozes style and substance from a true auteur." —John Bannon, from the foreword John Guastaferro embodies everything one admires in a magician: he is smooth but not flashy, soft-spoken yet in control. And he is an expert at crafting intelligent magic tricks. For the first time ever and exclusively with Vanishing Inc., John Guastaferro is releasing his first hardbound work—One Degree. With 160 pages and 240 photos, this elegant, refined collection is comprised of 20 professional card routines and five essays. One Degree features some of the most artistic, refined close-up material to come around in ages. One Degree explores the small, intentional improvements you can make to elevate the impact of your magic and help you connect more intensely with your audience. Too often we are led to believe that great results require massive changes. John Guastaferro believes that the extraordinary is closer than we think...just one degree away. Pre-order the book today to receive a copy of the book signed by John Guastaferro (dispatched on the 27 July) and a free video download featuring two great John G tricks. MORE PRAISE FOR ONE DEGREE: "John is unquestionably one of the best minds in magic today...a master of the art." —Jack Carpenter "It has been a long time since I read a book where with every routine and every utility move, I said to myself, 'That is going into my repertoire!' One Degree is such a book and belongs in every cardician's library." —Allan Ackerman “One Degree satisfies and illuminates to the nth degree!” —Jon Racherbaumer “Few creators in our field are so gifted that they leave the patina of their ingenuity on everything they touch—John Guastaferro belongs to this select lot. To see his work brought together in a book, one as beautiful as this, is a joy." —David Regal “Many authors try to articulate their inherent enthusiasm for their own creations, often with considerable vividness and opulence. The risk is that the ideas being conveyed fall short of the build-up. John Guastaferro has taken that risk in One Degree—and has come up a winner! Even if he had presented his creations unvarnished and ungarnished, they would have provided their own hype and excitement. Readers will quickly recognize that John, perhaps uniquely, has constructed his tricks, first and foremost, with his spectators in mind.” —J. K. Hartman Ships 27th July. I will wait on the reviews. I had a bad experience with John G at the last Magic Live. At one of the workshops, while all of the other magicians (who had graciously stepped in for an ailing Joshua Jay) were incredibly generous with their knowledge and time, when someone in the workshop would ask John G a question he would basically answer it by saying he showed the move on his DVDs. He then pulled out a bunch of DVDs and wanted to know if we wanted to buy any.
I realized that some magi chose to use the workshops as a sales opportunity. But since JJ had already been missing, this really rubbed me the wrong way. And none of the others did it |
