In a recent blog post, David Ben had some great advice on how to get the most from your practice. Having seen
They key phrase that pops up over and over again is "Deliberate Practice" since just doing something over and over again doesn't necessarily make it any better. His post is at Tricks & Tweets: Deliberate Practice Also, about half way down, there's a link back to an earlier entry that also has to do with practice. So how deliberate are you when you practice? |

Most of the time I practice Magic the same way I practice Music.
There is a time to “run through it” the best you can to see how it feels. There is a time to practice the individual riffs (or moves) until you can do them flawlessly. There is a time to start putting those riffs (or moves) together, to see how they fit. There’s a time to start at the beginning and see how far you can get before you “mess up”. There’s a time to record it, so you’ll know how it sounds (or looks) to someone else. There is a time to tweak the dynamics, such as volume, tempo, and breath. And through the whole process you’ve been trying to get a feel for how to “make it your own”, how much can it change to suit your style while still being true to the original effect? And all of this is before it goes live even once to a “real” audience. Definitely not a one night job!
...what if I could read your mind?

Generally practice to some specific end is almost always better than some rambling inchoate meander. Even if the end desired is just, as with myself lately, just keeping up some level of skill while I do things other than 'just magic'.
All best,

Thanks for the link James. I really like the tip attributed to Ross Bertram in the post, using musical rhythm seems like a natural fit. Cheers.

I think it's vital to be an entertainer- there are some magicians who are technicians instead of entertainers and forget the importance of "selling" thier magic and, making the audience care. |

I have lists that I use, just so I can make sure I cover everything. Is that weird?

I usually break things down into its component parts and practice them almost completely separately. It's only when I'm putting a new routine together with patter and everything for a show that I practice it all in one go.
I find that this not only allows me to find and correct the exact places where I might need improvement, but also allows me to mix and match moves to suit whatever plot or theme my show needs when I do eventually make a show out of it. Once I have a show, there is one particular magician friend to whom I perform it and he helps me hone the whole thing even further to be ready to perform flawlessly. I do the same for him of course. Then I practice it that way all together some more before it goes in the act.

Same. I normally master the moves first, then combine them into a trick. After that, I'll practice them with my script and then make it into a routine. Lastly, I'll do a few full dress with actual scripting and expression in front of my video cam and then I will present it to my magician friend for comments.
I will spend a lot of time watching my own video and refining my tone, expression, body language, pace of the tricks etc until I'm satisfied haha. - Andrew
