So then, why do you think so many pros open up to Steve Forte? Could it really be his reputation and level of skill that commands respect? It couldn't always have been that. It seems it isn't in their best interest to tip methods to him.
I have thought he might trade moves but the moves given up in trade may end up in print. Even if Steve doesn't teach methods just the fact the moves exist... Here is a related question for guys like Silver who actively are mechanics or seem to have been fortunate to session with real mechanics. How does one even go about meeting a pro? Do you hang around card rooms asking for Mr Hemmingway?!? : ) Just kidding about the Hemmingway reference but I do wonder how these meetings come about especially in a world so far removed from the one I read about in "Road Hustler." Since we are now in a time where it has already been postulated (in the other thread) that working hustlers are a rare breed. I should add I suppose this is a bit easier for folks in Vegas who may have access to "old timers" who have retired. |

There isn't a simple answer to your question.
In actual fact, as it relates to hustling......a large amount card and dice (and other) information is on the cusp of disappearing for good. Equally, and offsetting that somewhat is the fact that there are a small number of people, some hustlers, some academics, some collectors.....who make efforts to assemble what is in some cases extrememly difficult to acquire information, and safeguard it for the future. Those people tend to share the information they collect with the limited number of folks who have a similar interest, and who quite frankly (and perhaps more importantly) have proven that they can keep a secret. Forte is one of those guys who, along with being a true gentleman, is a true scholar........so folks not only talk to him, but they enjoy talking to him. For both of his books, his DVD set, and his numerous other publications.........Forte informs, but rarely tips. An obvious question might be, "well why not just publish this stuff all over the place, then it will be safe forever"? The answer would likely be something along the lines of "becuase we know less than half of what's out there, and if anybody were to publish stuff widely, then the rest would simply disappear, those who know would clam up forever"...........something like that. Example: This forum is regularly visited by dozens to hundreds of folks fishing for secrets. Most get p_iss_y when they don't get immediate answers to their questions, and very few hang around to establish the relationships required to further knowledge. Those folks who feel they deserve immediate entitlement, instant information, detailed answers, turn-off most everybody in this forum. If you want an example of the rare time things go differently, and how information is ultimately passed around...............look in the mirror ein_doppleganger. You yourself are an example of somebody who, although relatively new, has shown persistence, offered viewpoints without either feeling insulted or being insulting, are giving off the "I'm sincerely interested in this stuff" vibe, and, like in your post above, are showing an understanding to the point that you're asking informed and sincere questions, the answers to which cannot help but move you forward in your hunt for knowledge. You are perhaps closer to the flame than you think you are. Stay interested and engaged, keep room on your key chain for new keys. |

That's what I was thinking, emails aren't always the most reliable form of communication on the planet, perhaps Arnold's email didn't reach Steve in the first place, forever lost in cyberspace...
