I have recently passed an auditon for a talent show. I need a routine on the double. If anyone can help, then I would be very greatful. Here are the tricks that I have right now: cane to silks, wand to cane (hate it, but gets a good effect), dancing butterfly fan, and thumb tip silk. I can do anything with those props, but if someone has better ideas with common magician objects or handmade props, then I can include them If they are good. Don't worry about any of the practice with these items for I have a good enough knowledge to understand how they work. Any descriptions as for transpos would be great! I would name the trick in honor of the person who helped thank you all!

You passed the audition because of the tricks you did and how you did them. Just do it again because that is why they chose you. If you do anything else they will not be happy. I am speaking from experience.

The Mad Jester,
Bill is completely right. Please don't compare the "auditions" for TV shows like "Americans got Talent" with a real audition. On TV they're always looking for something new to show to the audience just for audience capture reasons. Me too, I got some experience in diffrent talent show contests and believe me we never came up with something new for every advancing step in the competition. We just had a team debriefing to find out what could be improved for the next step (timing, costume...), but we never did major changes like changing the effects or the music. Result : we win ! If you want to look professional keep this following phrase in mind that I once heard said : "Amateurs" are showing a lot of different tricks to the same people, professionals show the same tricks to a lot of different people. Good luck ! Oliver. |

That is a good idea. I will stay with my original routine because I recieved a comment from a friend who was watching my performance, and he said that I was brilliant, they just didn't know where to clap because I just went from one trick to the next. Any hoo, what is the TT?

Do what the above havve said, they know what their talking about. My only siggestion would be to do it to music( helps to take out "awkward moments" between effects. Im assuming this is for a school talent show. An effect that take minimal practice that takes a little bit of scripting is vanishing coke bottle routine(neilson bottle)
Instead of write you out a script, magicgeek has a vid of a simple routine on youtube that gets tons of laffs, trust me it kills when done right. Also, vanishing bandana kills kills kilss at talent shows, again trust me ive done it Also balloon swallowing,, again it KILLS,, although if the show is soon,, this will take a little bit more time to learn and perfect, so this one may be out of the question. If you have any questions on routining, or the scripting for the above effects, or anything don't hesitate to pm me. |

This will lead into some aplause cues in the whole act without asking for it. Please don't do the mistake and bow after every effect is done to get some applaus, this looks awkward, unprofessional and like beggin' for something. Good luck. Oliver. |

When I auditioned, I decided just to do a rope effect. When I was done, they asked what else I did. I said some small illusions. I mentioned that I had one with me. I always carry my "slice of hand", so I used one of the off camera assistants and did the effect.

Ok, since this is my first time, when should I ask for applause? People were impressed by routine, but I had no idea why they weren't showing it. My routine kind of goes to music, so I don't know where to fit that in.

Madjester, you do not ask for applause, judges do just sit there, they do not want to give anyone false hope.
If a real audience was present, and not other attendees, then you get applause by your actions and arm gestures, and a pause. But you should not have to tell an audience when a trick is at the finale. Of course if your presentation is so magical and shocking, then that is your applause, silence, because they are in shock. If it is your competition making up the audience, they will not be giving you applause. If it was a magicians audience, 99% of the time, they do not applaud, they are jealous or absorbing what they have seen. Magicians only applaud when it totally fools them beyond their knowledge. |
