I'm thinking of attending my first balloon convention. I'm a beginner twister.
If anyone has been before, which would you recommend?

For me its all about distance.Ive not been to any conventions at all.Try filling out a scholarship application from Pioneer, if they accept you your trip could be a lot less expensive. Diamond jam is either before or after Balloon Camp so if you have any interest in Decor work that's the place to go with all that fun for a total of 4-5 days. From what I know (not much) T&S is just twisting or most of the event is centered around twisting.Hope some of this may help.Boston in February or Balloon camp/Diamond Jam in August 8th-12th 8-9 Diamond Jam 10-12 Balloon Camp.
may you be filled with loving kindness

I'd go to the closest one possible to see if I want more as opposed to dropping a lot on one far away.

Diamond Jam was cancelled this year due to lack of interest, dunno if they are re-tooling or not.

T&S is a strong convention. I have taught there in 2007 and performed in 2008 & 2009

January 13th - 16th is the Florida Super Jam I'll be teaching at that one. Best Western Disney 2000 Hotel Plaza Blvd Orlando.

Millennium Jam is November 6-11 in Antwep Belgium

I can't give you an informed answer, because I have only been to one. But yes, Diamond Jam had registration problems this year, and Don Caldwell, Todd Neufeld, and many others got a last minute alterna-jam together for those already registered, and other newcomers. I hear it was great.

I can solidly recommend T&S for a new twister. I went as a new twister this past year. I took my daughter. We just registered for 2011 and our confirmation emails arrived today.

I can tell you what you WILL get at T&S.

Multiple class options in many time slots, all for $5 each. You will have trouble narrowing down what classes to take. You will be learning from the top folks in the business.

23 hour (now they clean late night apparently) jam room where you can learn from seasoned pros and just plain awesome folks. This is where I met Jack Mattson, had no idea who he was, and he showed me some impromptu magic that blew my mind.

An environment where newbies are not only welcomed, but embraced. I get in trouble for saying this around magicians, but I have felt mostly ego at magic cons, whereas the balloon world wants to bring you in. I felt more at home there.

Someone mentioned that this is "just twisting" as opposed to decor. If you're interested in decor as well, I think this is a place to see what people are doing in twisted decor. But yeah, if you want to do bridal arches, etc.... this may not be for you.

You get to see some amazing contest pieces up close.

While a lot of the atmosphere at T&S is on showcasing big and complicated, the classes are there for fast line work as well.

Having competed in the stage show, and watching the rest of it, I can say this is a highlight as well.

I can't say enough good about the event. I really can't.

Here's my photo album from T&S 2010 with my then 6-year-old daughter.

The guy in the fez is Smarty Pants, who posts here from time to time. He was just voted best childrens' entertainer in Chicago. Great lecture on balloon shows.

And finally, rent from netflix, or just buy the DVD "Twisted: A Balloonamentary." It convinced me I wanted to go to T&S. I don't think everyone involved with T&S was happy about all aspects about what was in the film, but as an outsider to this world, it made me want to be an insider.
