Google has put up a doodle today celebrating the 20th anniversary of Hubble's launch into space. This one piece of equipment has done more to expand our view on the universe than anything that has come before it. To see some of these images, go to http://hubblesite.org/gallery/

Thanks I didn't know. Cool pictures, very sureal like its hard to imagine that that stuff exists.
If there is a single truth about Magic, it is that nothing on earth so efficiently evades it.

Thanks for the reminder Clyde. Did you notice that Google is celebrating the day too?
We are living in the golden age of astrophotography. Hubble has given us views no one dreamed possible a few decades ago. On top of that, digital technology allows the amateur with a few thousand dollars if equipment (and patience and hard work) to take better photos than the best professionals with the giant telescopes could 20-30 years ago. Cheers for Hubble! And if you have a taste for more, don't forget the Astronomical Photo of the Day APOD. John

Magnus, yes I did. Just read the first sentence of my post
Was reading an article from the Sydney Morning Herald on the Hubble anniversary and was rather dumbfounded by a mistake made by the author. He said that the main mirror was messed up when Hubble was first launched and then a shuttle mission was sent to replace the mirror. What they actually did was not replace the mirror, but rather the cameras that captured the mirror images with ones that could correct for the defect. Another article, which I can't find now, also pointed out that this week has seen the 40th anniversary of Earth Day and another one for this week which I can't remember right off the top. That article was out of the UK.

Well, I have thrilled to some of the images, always tempered by wondering what could have been if not for the very american-like screw up that started the whole thing off. Truly an icon of what has become a unique blend of unbelievable vision and slipshod results in this country.
Guess we are good at making lemonade, however... Here's to you, Hub...

Well, mandarin, I'd not be too harsh on the "American-style screw-up" but would rather celebrare Hubble as an example of American-style ambition. It's a massive project that required big dreams, big finance and big engineering. And the world is richer for it.
