I would understand if you don't want to elaborate on this, but it doesn't hurt to ask. Have you ever had sheer coincidence improve an effect beyond what you initially invisioned and can you share such a story with us?
(I ask because there are several thread here on the Café with such stories.) |

Yes and at the best possible time! I was one of the headliners on the 2009 Mindvention All-Star Show. I was doing a prediction effect where a person called out a word from a page. Not the first word, he was to read a sentence silently and call out aloud one of the words. NO FORCE. Just call out a word. Inside the book's cover would be a prediction and that prediction would be for the same word called. NORMALLY I HAD TO HANDLE THE PREDICTION to do something sneaky to make sure the word matched the prediction.
However, on the slip of paper I would write a prediction beforehand. In the unlikely event the person called out the word on the slip I had a miracle. To make a long story short, I was on stage in front of my peers, prepared to do the dirty work to make the prediction correct. The guy called out a word. LO AND BEHOLD, it was the word predicted on the prediction slip. I had to keep from jumping for joy! I then made a big build up on HOW I WOULD NOT TOUCH anything and I didn't. I moved well away from the guy and asked him to read the prediction I would never touch. He read it, they had cameras there so I asked him to hold it up to the camera so it could zoom in showing what I had written. I know everyone in the audience was expecting me to handle the slip. When I didn't it floored the audience of mentalists. A lucky coincidence had created a miracle that appeared totally impossible, and in front of my peers and some of the biggest names in mentalism. Well guys, those who saw me at Mindvention will now know this was a lucky coincidence that couldn't have happened at a better time. Sorry, if some of you thought I was really that good! I know this story can't compare with legend of the jumbo card that a spectator jammed into a deck incidentally wedging it into the selected card, but it was the best one I have and at the time it was a miracle that nobody could explain. |

Was it a coincidence or did I really have a psychic premonition when I wrote the prediction? You be the judge, but that is the way it happened.

Great story! It just goes to show that having a "dummy" prediction pays off. Now if only I could figure out what the best dummy is for the effect I want to create...
