So just because this spill is already more urgent than the Valdez spill, and just because it's approaching the Gulf Stream... what then? I'm not able to forward-project? I'm not able to read the expert opinions that already say what I'm thinking? I have to wait until 100 dead water birds litter my own beach before I stand up and take notice? Get real.

Right. Nothing to see here folks. Deniers are in charge and everything has already been totally corrected. Move along now before we have to arest someone for reporting the facts....

Buddy, I all with you on this one, but can you admit in the "other" thread that what you were providing are not facts?

I remember performing a holiday party for British Petroleum a few years ago at the Omni Hotel in Houston. They were touting their safety record -- something like four or five years without an incident. These last few years have more than made up for that.
Complete disregard for employee safety and environmental safety -- bad valves, missing safety equipment. Horrible.

Putting laws about safe working conditions into effect doesn't mean it will actually be done.
What would we do or blame if mother nature through one of her earthquakes formed a crack in the ocean floor and oil came out? We sit in awe of deep ocean thermal vents, but it could just as easily be oil. Do we have anything in place to protect nature from itself? |

When the fine is cheaper than following the law, they will take the fine.
In all seriousness though, where is the media on this one? It seems to me that this is serious, and yet it seems to me they are not really hitting them as hard as I think they need to be. I wonder why?

The way things are set up, BP is in gharge of the remediation.
Other agencies like the Coast Guard can only monitor the event. Whether or not BP actually has the resources has been called into question. The industry regularly forms consortia for exploration and drilling. They should have a joint clean-up response consortium as well. Just like every city has a fire department. The thing that gets me steamed is that they are well aware of proven, approved technologies that prevent these accidents, at minimal expense. The insurance industry should be forcing them to use these things. But they don't. When loss of life occurs as a result of this, it amounts to negligent homicide in my book.

True. Twenty one years since Valdez, there aren't many working now with the experience to deal with something of this magnitude. The response was definitely faster however. I recall back then, it took 10 days before anything got started.
On the upside, perhaps people will now understand the sheer volume involved. This is just a single oil rig. The waste and, as I said before, mismanagement of this resource is astronomical.

You're right. This is just one oil rig.
The Valdez was a ship. A big ship, but it had a limited cargo. Even if it spilled everything, sooner or later the spill will stop. But what we have now is an underwater GUSHER. 200,000 gallons per day. One million gallons every 5 days. And it's almost at the 15-day mark, with absolutely no way to slow it down. In fact, the reason why it exploded in the first place is that a high-pressure pocket was hit that totally overloaded the system. And that same pressure is now spilling out at full speed. It's an open well head, and it's 5000 feet down. Only deep water robots can reach it, like the type that found the Titanic. We simply do not know what to do, and it may takes months to figure it all out. One million gallons every 5 days, and I happen to live down river. But I'm sure Danny will be here any second telling me that I'm just imagining things. |

Apparently, a typical Olympic-sized swimming pool holds 660253.09 gallons.
Rather incredible that a dozen or so swimming pools of oil can do so much damage. But, of course, it spreads out in a really, really thin layer.

I just read that it only takes 1 qt of oil to make 250,000 gals undrinkable.

But Florida is such a small state to compare to. It's not fair to the slick.
And besides, it'll be capped any second now. It'll never reach a single Florida beach. Danny said so. |
