I recently bought lightning from magicsmith.
Make ANY bulb illuminate = wrong it should say, make any frosted or non-clear bulb illuminate. And seeing as how frosted bulbs are no longer being sold in EU I'm pretty much screwed on that one, because I wanted to use it with big bang, LED lights or saving lights are out of the question. This product gets a thumb down from me, for misadvertising |

I have this, also to use with Big Bang.
And though I can see why you would be a bit down on this, and I agree frosted bulbs help hide a certain something; the ad is correct in that it CAN make any bulb illuminate. Just some would be more prone to flashing. If you want to PM me I'll let you know how I've got round this. Steve |

Still sounds like a cool effect. How much does it sell for?

Received mine today, however it doesn`t work, I supposed because of low or dead batteries. Will replace tomorrow and try again.
Have fun! John

There is NO mis-advertising on this product. You CAN make any lightbulb light up. There is no deception in how Chris did his advertising. It's a GREAT PRODUCT and is a big hit in my show.
Let me ask you...WHERE are you performing this? Close up on or Stage? I only do this on stage. I perform Big Bang and Lightening together and I use a CLEAR blub so they can clearly examine the bulb and see that there is nothing inside other than the stuff that's suppose to be in there. From a distance, nobody can see the gimmick b/c it's small and it distored by the bag itself...plus when the bulb begins to light up, the light is so bright that you can't really see where it's coming from. Also, if you wear a black shirt or black jacket (as pretty much ALL of us Magi do...what's the deal with that anyway???) the gimmick will easily blend in and nobody will see it. I perform 9 stage shows every weekend at my restaurant and have been doing this routine now for about 4 months. That's 144 shows that I have performed this routine in and NOBODY has caught me on it ONCE! So to recap... Lightening is AWESOME and there was no false advertising by Chris Smith at all. He built us a GREAT PRODUCT! Christopher

Ummmm....any friends with the other Chris?
A bad review and you come up to his defense. This seems to be the norm here.

It seems to me he is defending the product, not the man.
And yes, it is the norm. It's called different opinions. Check out any product here on the Café and you will find pros and cons. That's the point in a review forum.

I am in no way affiliated with Chris Smith or Magic Smith. Other than ordering a few of the MS products, I have no contact with him. I have had several issues with Departure, and Chris has been right there standing behind his products and has provided me with EXCELLANT CUSTOMER SERVICE!
I spoke out bc when I see someone rip a GOOD PRODUCT then I jump out to set the record straight. This wasn't just a review. If he bought it and thought it sucked, then that's fine! One less person doing it making it all the better for me. But that's NOT what happened here... He came out and said that MagicSmith has deceptive advertising which it doesn't. You CAN light any bulb you want. With a little extra thought, audience managmenet, and blocking, you CAN do it with a clear blulb. Maybe not CLOSE UP but then I don't consider this a "close up" kinda trick anyway.... Christopher

Was it mentioned that it wasn't a close-up kinda effect? And who is doing the ripping?? Customers it seems.

If that's what his review was, then fine! I wouldn't agree with it, but as I said before, one less person doing it, so better for me. But again, this is not what happened. He came out and said that MagicSmith has deceptive advertising which it DOES NOT HAVE! Here is the exact verbiage from the MagicSmith website: With Lightning, you’ll be prepared to make a light bulb spontaneously LIGHT - blurring the lines between science and the supernatural. The lightbulb can be in your hand, or far away from you. And. . .Lightning doesn't just cause bulb to turn on and off. It's been specially designed to realistically flicker and grow in intesity as your psychic energy builds to a climax. Perform Lightning in close, intimate living rooms, all the way up to large stages. Use Lightning on its own, or in combination with some of your favorite effects. Its the perfect lead-in before you shatter a bulb - as in MagicSmith's Big Bang and Mesika's Exploding Bulb. Watch the attached videos and witness the magic of Lightning. Lightning is 100% self-contained, tiny and very powerful. It’s completely custom designed - there's really nothing else like it. There’s virtually no sleight of hand, no set-up, and it resets automatically after each use. Everything that is said there is completely true! SHOW ME where the deception lies? I'm curious? Again, the OP is not ripping the product, he's ripping how it is being advertised. There is NOTHING wrong with the verbiage on the ad. Everything is 100% spot on! Had Chris Smith said that you could let a spectator hold the lightblub (which, depending on your audience management skills, I guess you could...?) or you can do this completely surrounded (which also, I guess you could if you're good at blocking) then, perhaps I would raise my hand and say "WTF?"! But again...NOT the case. MagicSmith has created a great product and is advertising it ethically...which these days is quite rare! Christopher

I use it with Big Bang and like it. I've stocked up on light bulbs as Target and Walmart both have good prices <$0.40 per bulb.

Dan,
If you have a BIG LOTS near you, then sell a 4 pack of blulbs (frosted or clear) for $1.00 (.25 per bulb). FYI! Christopher

So why should this say "not a good close up trick?" When I first saw this, I thought "this would be a great stage routine!" If someone bought this thinking it would make a good routine for a restaurant or strolling, then that's on them! I don't think it's very practicle to carry a light blub in your pocket and go strolling with it b/c it's not a very natural object to just whip out and say, "let's do something with this lightbulb." In that setting, I think it would be out of place...especially if you're doing it 20 times a night. I think the average magi of basic intel could figure that out. With that said, just last week, I performed this in a CLOSE UP SHOW where I had about 40 young ladies between the ages of 16 and 20 seated around a dinning room table and I performed this with big bang IN A CLOSE UP situation using a clear bulb! Guess what...nobody saw anything! Christopher
