I've never seen Mickey's pass, but how can the coin go into the other hand without the fingers placing it there?
In the real act, you take a coin and place it in the other hand, the fingers naturally have to follow. If your fingers stayed away from the hand as you placed the coin in that hand, it would look unnatural. I tried it. Don't get what you are saying. |

Though I understand what you're saying here poly, I would still say, "Well, not necessarily"...Check Goshman as to his toss of a coin to the other hand. Gives a retention and most say they even see it go.
In that, the fingers do not touch the other hand to make the vanish/pass happen. This "Intention of Reality (Al Schneider stuff)" is powerful. Like going from simple math to calculus or something like that. ![]()

There are a lot of tosses, where the other hand acts as if it were accepting or "catching" a coin. These are very convincing. The retention is seen from the placing or tossing hand. But from my knowledge, the retention of vision that we speak of usually comes from actually seeing the coin in the hand that it was placed in.

From studying his moves I would offer that the coin is either dropped into the hand, or the fingers removed prior to the last flash of the coin. Read -- the coin is apparently dropped in the hand and the fingers appear to be away from the coin at the flash. I can do either one -- but not with the "no angles" stipulation, so I'll watch some more.

Any guesses on how the "Anal Retentive Pass" is performed?

I have no idea how it's done, but it looks amazing... It almost makes me suspicious of something more than sleight of hand... especially that one fingered placement... wow! On a side note, if you watch any of Otis' other videos, you will notice that when he does a retention for those it's more of the normal retention... if my rov was as good as that first video I would be using it throughout all my routines... but hey that's just me

Mickey, you are confirming my guess but shouldn't this be in Secret Sessions?

Yes, there are many retention passes that don't require any movement of the thumb. In fact, the only vanish that does require movement of the thumb that I can think of is Ponta's, which I really like.
Get the thumb away from the coin? I don't get it. I have no idea what this means as I try my own pass. The thumb is where it should be...before and after. I think we'd like answers...not more questions. Seriously. No disrespect intended, but I have no idea what you are trying to accomplish here. |

Are you taking note?
How do both your hands look a fraction of a second after you place the coin into your hand? What does your spectator see? How do both your hands look in a fraction of a second after you open the hand to show the coin has vanished. What does your spectator see? One has to be honest with themself. Go to a mirror perform your retention of vision vanish and ask yourself is it perfect? If it's not perfect ask yourself is there such thing as a perfect retention vanish. Then ask yourself, does the perfect retention vanish exist? MICKEY SILVER |

...ask yourself, does the perfect retention vanish exist? YES. It seems that only 3 elements are required; 1. relaxed position of both hands. 2. imperceptible movement of the hand making the steal. 3. Proper positioning of the hands so as to present the illusion of no possible hiding place. Preferably with all fingers and thumb showing.

Right., it's possible but I don't think so after comparing each take.

Why in the world would any one perform a retention vanish and keep from showing their hands empty... The Anal retention vanish would be perfect if he lifted his right hand up immediately after placing it in his left hand.
Also If his right hand looked empty a fraction of a second after his left hand opened showing the coin had vanished.. Note: Our spectators (meaning non magicians) only care about the inside of our hands..., not the back of our hands..., I believe most magicians know this. If not they should! I agree with Mickey here, even though the Anal Retention Vanish does look good in the "putting" part of the vanish, his hand looks extremely suspicious just frozen there palm-down after the put. It's like... why on earth would that hand be held like that if it was empty...?

The perfect retention vanish actually wouldn't look anything like the common "retention vanish". This is one of the most unnatural coin moves in sleight-of-hand.
