Haunted deck, brainwave deck and card in cell phone. Where's the originality? These are all shop bought items.

May not be "original", but all powerful effects for the layman Andi.
I suppose if one were doing a performance for a bunch of magicians these three choices would likely get quite a few groans, but remembering that 95%+ of laymen have never even seen quality close-up of any kind, these three aren't really that bad as choices. Some might even say these themes are up there among the most powerful "small" tricks available (not specifically "Card to Cell Phone", but "Card to Impossible Location" in general). |

I seem to remember a similar argument after the airing of the first Blaine special. If people are entertained and amazed, they are... no matter if the effect is new or original. We forget that at times.

How right you are. I remember being in New York when the first Blaine special came out. All the local magicians were griping about how all he was doing was AC and biting quarter, etc. Then soon afterwards we had a glut of guys doing AC, biting quarter, etc, trying to be the next Blaine.
Now that Blaine, Criss and others have done mentalism we suddenly have a glut of guys doing book tests, CT, etc. I applaud him for getting a spot on TV and doing a good job. Greg

Originality? Who was the last guy you saw on national TV that did non-store bought, non- proven tricks?

I know Shimshi has unique material of his own but he decided to play it safe, a real shame. He could have stood out but as things stand he's just another performer of store bought tricks. Yawn. |

Andi, he did what he did.
When it's your turn to do it for Ellen on her show, you do original stuff ok... We'll all be cheering for you... All the very best. Pakar Ilusi

Rant
"Magic for the ADD Population" It seems Ellen(and producers) want as many quick visual effects as posible within the alotted time. Most of the performers I've seen zip through their effects like performing monkeys and by the end you haven't learned anything about the person behind the magic. It's like a freakin cooking show segment. There is no time to build up the effect, it's BAM,BAM, BAM.This is not what magic should be about. To me, and I love magic, after the TA DA moment, I'm thinking, "Yeah, so what?" Make me CARE!Do not assault me with it. And then I think of someone like Don Alan who also did a lot of effects yet it didn't seem like he was rushing through them. He was also very funny. Maybe part of the problem is the performer is usually just performing for Ellen and not some of her other guests so there is no interaction or asides after the magic occurs. I'm taking anything away from Shimshi. You do what they want, get in, get out. Later use it for promo on your website. Whew, I feel better now. Woodfield |

Can't say that I disagree with you there Woodfield. It is one of the reasons that watching Hans Klok gives me a headache.

I have not seen this Ellen episode, but I was at a Mothers Day dinner with family yesterday and magic always comes up when we are all together because they know I'm a magician ...of course.
The first thing 1 mom asked me if I saw the awesome magician on Ellen? I said I had not and a few others chimed in and saw it and thought it was great. I asked what did the magician do? One said he did the most incredible trick she ever saw. The card Ellen picked was put back in the deck and the deck was placed on the table. The magician's hands just waved over the deck...they never touched it...and the deck cut itself and Ellen's card came out. I remember the first time I saw the Haunted Deck...I thought it was the greatest trick I ever saw as well. Just because Shimishi was on TV doesn't mean he has to do his own original material to impress magicians. He is playing to the vast majority...lay people. Even without seeing the show...I believe it was an excellent choice for TV. Rich B. |

The best presentation has everything to do with understanding your audience. Never forget that, and obviously, Shimshi kept that in mind.

His somersault card would have been knockout.
It would have made him the biggest thing since Blaine IMHO. Why oh why didn't he do his signature trick. A big chance missed. |

My guess is it wasn't his choice. I'm sure he pitched all his magic and producers made a choice. Blaine might have the cache to come on a show unrehearsed with sight unseen material, but not a first-timer.
