I'm looking for a comedy routine which was publish in a magazine sometime in the past few years.
It's not so much a magic effect as a complex, change raising swindle involving currency exchange and beer. Two spectators play two countries. The performer 'buys' a beer from each and yet, at the end of the routine, both countries have more money, the performer has the same amount of money he started with plus two beers. Hence the line, "everyone is rich and the beer is free." Posted: May 7, 2010 6:19pm A mystery for the ages... |

Thanks.

Could this be a routine that involves moving bean/pebbles (money) around a pattern then adding the four rows and each still have the same number of beans?
If so, It's a very old puzzle, I've seen it in many books but the one that stands out, I think, is in Micheal Webber's "Life Savers" If not, well then I may have just come up with a new routine.

That routine is called "To Feed Many."
This routine involve two spectators playing the roles of countries. Each 'country' has there own currency. The exchange rates between the two countries allow the magician to buy a beer from each spectator and still have the same amount of money they started with. |

Unfortunately I don't remember the year or month, but it wasn't too long ago.

Yes, I published the routine in Genii, and a few Castle magicians screamed at me for doing so, even though all I contributed was a contemporary presentation to an old paradox. I love the routine - so entertaining and amazing, yet it's not actually magic!
I have some copies of the magazine and can sell one to you if you want. Paypal $6 to davidregal@att.net I'll pry one down off my bedroom ceiling. |

Also, check the routine from Maurice Fogel's lecture notes from about thirty years ago. He patters about a guy living in a house on the border of two countries and has two dollars of each currency. You wound up with the beer bottles being free in this routine too. I am assuming it is the same routine/ method.
