I'm not really a beginner, but this is sort of a novice question so I put it here:

I really like style of Japanese magic because the passion and creativity behind their effects is very much what I like. I own Five Times Five Japan, The New Magic of Japan, and I am familiar with Shigeo Takagi's material from his book because of the video I own.

What other Japanese magic books are there? I have done some basic Google research and those are the only titles I could find (besides the out of print Sawa book). If someone could list a few titles (if possible) that would be great. I prefer books rather than DVDs but beggars can't be choosers.

Many thanks,
Sam Weiss

New Magic of Japan, Kaufman & Greenburg is a fine title.
Even though you're familiar with Takagi-san's work you should run down a copy of The Amazing Miracles of Shigeo Takagi. This is also a Kaufman book.

Both those titles are available right now from Richard Kaufman. You should go to

http://kaufman.geniimagazine.com/booksandtapes.html

He has a 3 for the price of two deal going. If any Gaijin can be considered an expert on books on Japanese magic it is either Richard Kaufman or Max Maven. If you post this sort of question on the Genii forum, I can only assume Mr. Kaufman could name far more titles than I can. Oh, heavens, Mr. Kaufman also published a book of Dr. Sawa's magic, Sawa’s Library of Magic Vol.1. I don't think it is easily available. Check the site at Genii, or check with some of those who routinely deal in used stuff. I'd go here;

Here are a couple of more titles I see, as I look about in the magic room.

Tokyo Trickery by Takeshi Nemoto has a wonderful cups routine. I've only ever seen spiral bound copies. They were sold by Magic Inc. decades ago. They've probably still got a copy or two, in the back.

No collection of Japanese Magic books in English would be complete without Kosky and Furst's The Magic of Tenkai. This is hard to find. I'd contact Byron Walker in California for that one. http://www.byronwalkermagicbooks.com

The world's your oyster. If you get the titles I mentioned you should have a fine body of work to mull over.

KG,

PS. I like the magic of the Japanese school too!

Yep I have those books Richard published (including the New Magic of Japan), and I am aware of the Sawa book. Sadly, it is not published anymore so I've been looking around for it. The only reason I never got the actual book for Takagi was because the book looked like it involved a lot of strange props I don't have... none the less I'll end up getting it eventually Smile

I'll have to look for those two other books though... much thanks as I would have never found them myself.

...Okay, just looked for them and and I didn't have luck on any of them Smile Shucks...

... Where's light from the lamp himself when you need him? Smile

Does anyone else know of any other places to get Tokyo Trickery, Sawa's library of Magic, and The Magic of Tenkai? These are exactly what I was looking for (Thanks Kent!) and any help would be appreciated.
