I have seen Bruce Kalver perform his Head Shrinker, when he lectured at our SAM.
I don't see it. I was wondering if there are any people out there like me, who cannot see this optical illusion ?
- Sincerely,
Dr Goodkin |

Possibly has to do with how far away you are from the disk.
And can you fix a broken bone or is the Dr. an optical illusion, itself?

LOL
I'm a real doctor. And I've tried to see it work. I have friends who own it....I just cannot seem to get the effect. I also can't see those magic eye poster things either.

I would recommend googling about the science of the Magic Eye poster. Can't speak for Bruce's wheel, but I do know Dr. Goodkin that I read years ago that there is a special brain chemical that allows one to see the magic eye poster and some don't have it. Sorry, sounds like it's your genes...

When Magic Eye Posters first came out I was in my 20s. It took me a while to see them but when I finaly did it was a WOW moment. I learned how to teach others to see them quickly but there were always some who just couldn't. I thought they were not following directions well or they had short attention spans.
Now I'm in my 40s and I can't see the image. You guessed it, my vision has declined. You might have good enough vision for most things but if you don't have very sharp vision you won't see the image. I don't find that to be true with the Growing Head illusion. Most of the time when people don't see the illusion it is because they are too close or because it is being spun too fast. Have you tried watching it on youtube? Surpisingly it works very well. Even though you are inches from the screen, because everything is scaled down it is as if you are 30 feet away and watching from the back of the room. |

My experience agrees with daffy doug's. I always tell them not to "try" to see the image but just to look through the poster and let their brain do the work of finding it. Some people just can't follow this suggestion. They keep consciously searching for an image.
As for MagicBrent's chemical, that doesn't sound right to me. There is no mystery to how the Seeing Eye images work. Still, I'll google and keep an open mind. |

I can't see magic eye images, because I only have one eye that is completely functional.

Well I am a psychologist and a magician and thus am fascinated by this stuff. I believe there are some people who just cannot "see" these effects. I personally know some folks like that. There are folks who can't be hypnotized either, those who can't "picture" something in their mind, and so forth. I can see the effect w/ Bruce's spinning wheel but cannot see the "magic eye" poster effects at all.
It's just "who we are", I guess. |

I have trouble understanding why anyone with functioning depth vision could not be taught how to view the "magic eye" images.
If these images were printed on a transparent sheet and you put a physical object behind it at exactly the same distance as the virtual image, simply looking at the physical object through the clear sheet would force the angle of the eyes to be correct for the virtual image. The focus of the eye's lense could be wrong though if the room is not lit enough. For starters it's best to force the pupil to be small (lots of light) which provides a larger depth of vision, taking focus out of the equation. /Tomas |

My vision has gotten a little less sharp over the years. I don't have prescription glasses yet. I have no trouble with depth perception but a lot of trouble seeing these images that were once easy. I think any sleight fuzzyness might be magnified by the fact that you are trying to resolve an image (actually 2 images) that are not where you are actually focusing. You could try a simple experiment. Find some glasses that magnify only a little bit. So you can still see across the room but it is now just a little less focused. Now try to view the 3D image. I think you will find it more difficult. |

Andruss has a same effect using his bug wheel. Anyway, there is now a stage version, 25 in diameter.
I get the same reaction from my audiences. (some people) |

I just used this for a show recently. I ask for a show of hands after indicating how many saw it. I always say its about 60-75 percent each time.
I wish I could have a plexiglass version made someday. The cardboard version just has to handled like glass and has started to warp. If anyone knows of a place I can have a plastic one made, please advise. Decomp

I've used this illusion a few times now. I do it twice and it seems like the first time about half the audience see it work, the second time about 75% - 80% see it.

To me the magic eye posters came really easy. because I had a habit. I used to squint to have double vision when I was a child. I always focused on an object and duplicated it.
and then when I got a magic eye book I figured out that I just have to focus on a point and put this point over a similar point in the picture. so I was able to see almost instantly the 3d picture. |

Macc, there are two ways to see the images. One is to go cross-eyed and the other is to go wall-eyed. Most posters are designed to be seen wall-eyed, that is your eyes are pointing outward sleightly.
If you see these posters cross-eyed the image will be smaller and convex objects will be concave and visa versa. I only mention this because I wonder if you are seeing them the intended way. Going cross-eyed is a much easier thing to teach yourself so I thought that may be what you are doing. If it is you will probably be delighted if you re-learn how to see the images by diverging your eyes. |
