Hi all: I am fired up about two new effects I recently have been working on and thought I would share them with you for any other ideas- I'll steal them from you and stick them in our upcoming lecture in Marion! Yep, I am an idea thief.
I hope to be filming both in June for an upcoming episode of Now That's Magic! I also will be demonstrating them at the 11AM Friday lecture with MagicBob and PJ Weber at the 2010 FCM convention. The first is "Through The Eye Of The Needle" made by FAB Magic in Colon, Michigan http://www.FABMagic.com It retails for $15.00- you can get it sent to you postpaid for this price from Rick Fisher at FAB simply just by mentioning the FCM. He'll waive any shipping expense. I use a white cloth with a camel on it (the routine suggests using a silk)- this old Supreme Magic? trick just ties in quite well with the story of the Rich Young Ruler found in Matthew, Mark and Luke. I asked Rick to make my set with longer ropes to give me more "play" after the ropes go through the large wooden needle. The second trick (also a commercial trick) was inspired by a Del Wilson article in The Christian Conjurer about 1987 where he mentions taking a box of Kix cereal out of a box of Life cereal ("How I get my kicks out of life"). Somebody did that gag at the FCM convention in one of the evening programs. This ties in great as a prefix to Robert Baxt's new "Baxt's Boxes of Cereal" trick--- which my set ends up with TRIX as the final chosen box. You may have to ask Robert for that particular box to be the final one. Then into the "I can do TRIX, only God can do miracles" patter- a nice audience friendly effect near the beginning of the show. I do not use Robert's youtube patter exactly of course. It is very similar to the McCombical Prediction Deck but does not use cards which can be harder to see and not young kid friendly. I have not yet figured out a real good Gospel routine for it other than at the beginning of the program as part of the Gospel magician "tricks" disclaimer. But still I think it is a very nice family effect that I have not seen performed elsewhere very much. And it packs very small, plays very big. If you have any more "cereal box" jokes or patter, I would sure like to hear it. Did you hear that Snap, Crackle and Pop got shot? They are looking for a cereal killer of course (nah, I don't want to use that old one). Appreciation again to all, I got my May/June issue of THE VOICE today, another winner issue very nicely put together with a helpful "Creating Comedy" article by Oz and Wilde. Thanks guys! Roger from http://www.ChristianMagician.org |

By the way, Rick Fisher from FAB Magic reports something brand new is coming to Colon, Michigan soon. I am not sure what it is, but I know it involves magic. Another store? A Magic Walk of Fame? More shows? If you happen to make it to Colon on August 6, 2010- that is a very good day to visit. Duane Laflin's Gospel magic lecture is a 9AM at the Methodist Church. Always an A+, plus he'll have a dealer display booth at the elementary school. Throughout the day there are lots of various lectures and dealer events. Free fireworks after the evening show too. Registration for the entire Abbott's Get-Together is $160, or you can also get an affordable daily pass. Registration for FAB's "Magic Week" events is free. Hope to see you there Friday morning fellow FCMers!

I got off the web (just Google "camel cartoon" or "camel picture")a cartoon picture of a very fat two humped camel- e.g.- a "fat cat" camel. I then went over to Hobby Lobby- they sell a white fabric that is thick enough that it looks like a large table napkin or handkerchief- but thin enough that if you put the picture of the camel below it- you can easily trace onto the cloth the cartoon outline of the fat camel. The marker I used was a thick black fabric marker you can also buy at Hobby Lobby. So instead of tying a silk onto the ropes as suggested in the routine, I am going to tie this cloth (which cost less than $2)onto the rope with the picture of the "fat cat camel" on it. My routine is going to be based upon the points made on the Rich Young Ruler from the MacArthur Study Bible- that the man was not convicted of his own sin (but Jesus saw right through it)- and even though the disciples questioned how one could be saved- WITH GOD ALL THINGS ARE POSSIBLE for our needed salvation. I am still working around with the story- but I think it will have great potential and I am not aware of other Gospel magic effects on the market that directly address this challenging and sobering "camel through the eye of a needle" portion of Scripture. Glad you could send Rick at FAB in Colon some business- he is super fast in his response and is a very nice guy as well. I hang out at his store in Colon during the August Get-ToGether during magic week after the evening shows much of the time- Rick opens up his little store stage to anybody who wants to do a trick or two...

Ok - I caved. I just ordered one - for $15 you can't beat it.
the effect and working is actually described in one of Edwin's books and I had always thought "I'll just make that someday." Someday hasn't made it's way here yet. Not only that, I've always been a fan of Supreme and/or Edwin Hooper's stuff. |

Edwin Hooper is credited in the instructions provided by FAB Magic. $15 postpaid is not too shabby considering you get the instructions, a very long piece of supple magician's rope, those special "gimics" that make the trick work, and a silver painted wooden needle. Entirely made in Colon, Michigan, which is also appreciated by us here in a State with the highest unemployment rate in the U.S.. I think you'll like it, I hope to demo it at the 11AM Friday lecture at the FCM convention (but I will not be selling it- you will have to still order it from FAB- be sure to mention FCM so you get it postage free).

I heard a rumor FAB Magic may be moving in the next few weeks directly across the street in Colon, Michigan, to a larger facility, right next to Sterlini Magic Company and the legendary M&M Café'. Stay tuned... I do not know if that is a done deal yet- but congrats again to Rick Fisher and the fabulous FAB Magic Company in Colon for keeping magic alive there with Abbott's. Looks like there might be three magic companies operating out of their own facilities in Colon during Magic Week- Wow! Rick says the internet business has been during better lately and he is making more stuff than ever... Check out the FAB Magic website for new products he is actually making on work benches right there in his Colon facility- neato! It is pretty neat to see the last time I was there parts of magic tricks laid out on big work benches being painted, sawed, glued, etc.

Yes it's official - we have signed a long term lease and moving in the next several days! We are updating the showroom but keeping that old 'feel'. We are expanding the workshop as well. We are also close to signing leases for two branch FAB shops - one in Dallas, Texas and the other in Indianapolis, Indiana. Believe it or not .. no shops in Dallas or Indy proper. We are also entertaining the idea of having a shop in Australia - we are keeping our eyes on the euro situation before we make that move but it is on our list.
Our headquarters will remain the same here in Colon and yes we did receive an invitation to pick up lock, stock and barrel and move to Phoneix, AZ. I have to be honest and tell you I thought about it long and hard and the incentives were shall I say 'generous'. But, in the end I realized this IS magic town...I love it for what it is and I have enjoyed many friendships here. I can't see me living anywhere else. THIS is home. Many thanks Roger....we are looking to have a re-grand opening in late June..stay tuned for details. Okay, back to work |

See the first post of this thread... Rats... I see now a full page ad on page 7 in the June, 2010, issue of MAGIC Magazine for this trick. I got the "Baxt's Boxes of Cereal" off his website moons ago, now everyone is going to see it- drat!- I wanted it all for myself. Anyway, it is a wonderful audience participation effect- great for family, kids, and church programs even. Plus you can put the whole thing in a large envelope, takes up almost zero space in your travel case. I added a few more kid friendly cereal jokes (and dropped the "adult" lines). I might show it at the FCM convention Friday 11AM lecture if have time...

Thanks for the idea of Tracing a Camel on a Silk (cloth) - I think I may do that as well

If you google "camel cartoon" on the internet- you will end up with a bunch of neat drawings of camels. The one I picked is a line drawing of a very heavy smiling camel(a fat cat camel) that ties in well with the story. I printed it out and then blew up/increased the size of it on my printer/copier. It traced quite easily through the white cloth I purchased from Hobby Lobby. I am bringing this to the 2010 FCM convention, it will be included in the 11AM Friday lecture that MagicBob, P.J. Weber and myself are doing. Should be fun!

Since Eric is talking about FAB magic I would like to add Rick's new "Acrobatic silks improved" to the list. I saw it demonstrated at Rick's old shop last Summer, and I knew that I just had to have one. It is a very old idea that Rick has really improved. Instead of a wooden bar it has a hollow plastic bar, and is resetable in a matter of seconds. I have had mine since February, and it has become one of my favorite childrens effects, and it is a real bargain too for $25.

I apologize for calling Roger Bus Eric. I met Roger in the FAB magic shop last August, and I should be better with names.

Hey Al fellow Ring 211 member- good as always to see your postings. Al sat about 4 seats away from my seat at Abbott's- always willing to share good ideas with his fellow magishes... I saw Rick's version at FAB too, only reason I did not buy it because I have two other wooden models already sad to say...

Duane Laflin in the latest hard cover ADVANCE has a nice routine on "A Camel Through The Eye Of The Needle" on pages 19-22 for use with Needle Through Balloon. But with some modification as to the effect/trick being used to make the same point- his routine would easily work with the FAB trick. Ironically, on pages 9-13 of the same issue, is Duane's "Daniel And The Lions" which is the same trick as FAB's "Through the Eye of a Needle" except a wooden needle is used for the FAB effect rather than a card of Daniel. FAB's "gimic" also is not a thread holding the two ropes together behind the specator's back ala "Grandmother's Necklace" principle. Laflin magic is found at a variety of web sites now including http://www.LaflinMagicStore.com with larger stage items at Laflinstagemagic.com He also will be selling refurbished illusions at http://www.illusionsinstock.com If you want to get on the email list for Advance, email Duane at Advancegospel@yahoo.com and request to be put onto their contact list to get updates and Advance news on a regular basis.

Not that it would ever matter to the audience or the effectiveness of this trick, historically, the "eye of the needle" was a gate in the wall of Jeruselem -- low and quite narrow. Thus, to get a camel through was difficult but not impossible, but the use of a thread-needle has no accuracy.
