Folks, is it inappropriate to ask how to accomplish a finger roll in silk effects? Being a newbie and not having unlimited funds, I simply can't purchase every single thing out there that explains how to, as it were. In the instructions for one of the silk effects I have (silk from a card) it says to finger roll the silk. Shouldn't instructions do a better job of explaining the effect for all to understand, not just the folks in the know? After all, I purchased the effect; seems to me the finger roll should be explained too. Thanks, Bob

My neighbor rang my doorbell at 2:30 a.m. this morning, can you believe that, 2:30 a.m.!? Lucky for him I was still up playing my drums. |

If you have access to "The Learned Pig" Web site, then you have access to Jean Hugard's "Silken Sorcery" for free, Page 3, E.

http://www.allmagicguide.com had a method explained using a pencil some time back, you can check and see if it is in there archives.
Yes I agree with you, that magic purchased should be complete in description, but not having enough money is not a good reason, just save up for the "not necessary" things you need. I build my own computers, I currently have a half built computer, I don't have "unlimited funds" for memory, a hard drive and a power supply. Will you give me those items so I can finish building my dream computer? My car was totalled and the guy did not have a license, insurance, or was a legal citizen of the USA. I do not have "unlimited funds" to buy a new car, will you give a new car, I would be most grateful. Thanks. |

Thanks for the advice sir, but where did you read that I asked anyone to GIVE me anything? Is the explanation of a finger roll that much to ask for? I thought the Café was to get help for these very things. A trick's instructions should explain the effect, and shouldn't ASSUME all buyers know what a finger roll is... I've purchased my share of stuff as we all have. I'm a 62-year old retiree and have worked my entire life to get what I have attained. In a sense none of us have unlimited resources, so I guess I don't understand where you are coming from with your lecture. Yikes. Thanks again. Bob

Years ago I wrote a satiric article for our local IBM newsletter, _The Wizard's Eye_, called "My Favorite Method" in which I described an advertisement for a 20th century silks routine. The article concluded with a scenario of a purchaser ordering the trick and, upon opening the box, finding only a handkerchief pull. The instructions explained how to vanish a silk and ended with the words "Use your favorite method to make the duplicate yellow silk appear between the red and green one." I also intended on continuing with a monthly column in which I explained my own personal favorite methods for various utility moves.
I had considered writing a book called "My Favorite Method" with a collection of assorted modus operandi for accomplishing basic effects like vanishing and producing cards, coins, balls... but then, isn't that what most beginners' books should do? It might still make a good idea for a column in a magic magazine. ----- Amado "Sonny" Narvaez
