Hello, all.
I recently converted over to Firefox (from IE 6) and I'm really loving it--particularly it "Add-on" (apps) feature. However, on thing has me perplexed. When I then click on the scroll wheel on my mouse, instead of being able to now scroll down on the active window page (by merely moving my mouse up and down), Firefox instantly minimizes the window and places this miniature version on my screen. If I have 3-4 windows open at the time, Firefox reduces the size of that active window and then places miniature copies of each open window page on the screen. (Sort of like a P in P TV screen or a "split screen" display. Not only are the pages impossible to read or work from in this split screen mode but also the ability to scroll down on a page (i.e., as should be activated by clicking on the mouse scroll wheel) is unavailable. What is causing this and how can I get the scroll wheel to return to "normal"? Thanks for any info in this regard. Best, Mike

Not an expert on this by any means, but this sounds more like something the software that came with your mouse is doing, not something Firefox is doing.
Two good add-ons are Ad Blocker Plus and No Script. |

I also have no mouse issues when running Firefox. By the way, I wish certain people ran Firefox. It would help them eliminate about 90%, or more, of their spelling errors.
I don't know if you're running Windows XP, Windows Vista, or Windows 7, so I will just write what to do for Windows Vista. I can get the information for Windows XP if you need it, but you should be able to find what you need by searching a bit yourself. Unfortunately, I don't have access to a Windows 7 system yet. For Windows Vista, navigate as follows: Control Panel - Appearance and Personalization - Ease of Access Center - Make the mouse easier to use On that screen, click on "mouse settings" - and the "Mouse Properties" dialog window will be launched. (Yes, the names are inconsistent. There is probably an easier way to get to the "Mouse Properties" dialog window, but I don't know what it is). Select the "Pointers" tab on the dialog. The "Scheme" I have set is "Windows Aero (system scheme). Also, check out the "Customize:" settings. There is also a "Use default" button on that dialog. If you click that, you'll get default settings. (I don't know the ramifications of clicking that though). I expect your issue can be fixed in that dialog window. Finally, you can always go to "Programs and settings" and see if you have an special mouse software installed. If so, you could search online for the latest version of the software. Sometimes uninstalling special mouse software will make some mice work better, but do some research, it could also make it so your mouse doesn't work at all. If your system is relatively modern, i.e. running any of the three Operating Systems mentioned above, you should generally be able to uninstall all mouse software and then boot with the mouse plugged in, and the necessary mouse driver will automatically be installed. I'm just giving the warning above because I know nothing about your system. Good luck. Update: Also, go into the Firefox "Options" menu, and select the "Advanced" tab. I have auto-scrolling enabled, and "smooth scrolling" disabled. Which leads to me to: which version of Firefox are you running? Is it the latest? I'm running Firefox version 3.6.3. To find the version number, go to the Help menu and select the "About Mozilla Firefox" submenu.

I agree with Bill on the spell checking. And I love "inline definitions".

I'm going to have a go at your instructions and see if I can find the XP-equivalent of what you are describing for Vista. I'm also going to uninstall my mouse drivers turn off the machine and re-boot. Hopefully, I can resolve this. If I can't, it's not the end of the world and I definitely am not going back to IE6 (or any subsequent IE editions). OOPS! You snuck in that update. Thanks a lot. I'll check that out now before I send this post.... Back again. I'm running Firefox 3.6.3 and I have all of the preferences you have checked and unchecked. Quote:

Inline definitions is an add on (it may be actually called Google definitions, but the right click option says "inline"). If you right click on a word, and choose it, a little window with definitions pops up. It makes me seem much more literate than I really am.

It's an amalgam of the two - inline Google definitions; and I'm installing it now.

MYSTERY SOLVED!!
This was not a Firefox issue. Instead, it was a Mouse software issue. About a month ago, I installed a wireless mouse and keyboard combo onto my computer to test out the mouse and keyboard for a friend. Unbeknownst to me, that software's scroll wheel default parameter was: "Instant Viewer". (My wireless mouse's scroll wheel default parameter is "auto scroll". When I gave my friend back his keyboard and mouse, I neglected to remove the software drivers for that combo. Soooo, my wireless mouse began following the mouse software commands of my friend's installed mouse software. Live and learn.
