Can I ask if anyone knows the specific reason why chain is traditionally used?
Can fast and loose not work with a loop of rope or a simple shoelace in a loop or something similar? Or is the fact that it is a chain integral to the effect? Thanks. |

A chain makes it visually confusing to the spectator, especially the French Twist variety from SfS or Rich Hennessey. It confuses the eye so they can't see whether the chain crosses over or under the other loop. Its not absolutely necessary, and people have used cords and ropes for years, but any little bit helps plus chains are easier to carry and look nicer.

Thanks a lot for that, makes a lot of sense. So far I have been doing an 'in the hands' version with a loop of cord so my hands cover all the crosses. Was just wondering if I was missing a trick here (no pun intended).
Thanks. |

I prefer the ball chain for my own work for one reason: some people believe you pull the chain from different places and that this allows you to control the game. By using the ball chain, I can open the chain and put on my finger ring to ensure that I will only pull from one place - the ring. In this way I can't "yank their chain"...

I worked a trade show where the theme was motorcycles. (It was a mortgage conference, go figure...)
I linked my SfS chain to a Harley Davidson wallet and used it like you to show that I'm always pulling from the same spot each time. Plus, the HD wallet had the prize that they were trying to win.

When I first heard about Fast & Loose, I did not have money to buy the chain. But I did buy the SFS book. Since I was mostly doing street magic at ren faires, I got interested in the orignial method of using a spiral strap. Now I use it at 19th century events too. Is anyone using that style?

That is interesting about the spiral strap. You may like to consider my copper plated chain. It has an nice antique look...the weight is great.....and due to its french rope chain linkage...it is very deceptive.

Hello, I have been a member for some time know but never posted anything. I just came along this thread. I make this fast and loose chains to sell at my lectures. They come in three colors, gold, silver or rose and come with velvet carrying pouch. They sell for $25. I have collected many chains over the years and the ones I make fit the bill quite nicely. I don't want to take away anything from the Scoundrels set...which I have a few myself but my chains are of the same quality at practically half the cost. If interested I can send some pics or would like to purchase them just e-mail at sonny_boombatts@yahoo.com
I showed Sal Piacente a set of my chains when I had him review and endorse my latest book "Swindled" He gave it two thumbs up! By the way I am thinning out my gambling collection and getting rid of some duplicates and have a KC Card company catalogue from 1953 available for sale! Mint condition...and I do mean Mint! I know those are always popular. Thanks guys Talk to you soon -Sonny |

Sonny, that sounds like a good bargain, but when you say they are S4S quality, does that mean they are the same heavy weight steel chain with the same quality lifetime-guaranteed plating?
We offer a lifetime guarantee on our gold and nickle chains against tarnishing, chipping or cracking of the finish. It costs us a lot to have the plating done right, and otherwise we could not make our full-replacement offer. There is nothing wrong with providing a good chain at a low cost, but I would love to see your chain if it is as you say, of the same quality as the S4S chain... |

SFS Chain. Mine has taken years of abuse and still looks great, like new. I didn't realize they had a lifetime guarantee on the finish. Thanks Whit.(I bet though this chain will last a lifetime).

Hi,
I've already got the excellent S4S DVD along with the excellent S4S chain, but can anyone tell me where I can find out other patterns to arrange the chain, especially in the air -without need for a table Thanks Ian |

Apocalypse Sept., 1983, All-In-Air Endless Loop by Robert L. Brooks. There are also some in the air variations in the Supreme "Know How" Series Endless Chain booklet from 1983.
