There are 25 Joni Mitchell songs on my ipod. The songs that have five stars next to them are California, a case of you, all I want, both sides now, in France they kiss of main street, and Carey. When I hear these songs they make me feel like I'm 20 again.

But Al, when you were 20 Joni Mitchell was four years old.....

I believe that I am a year or two younger than Joni.

Do you really think that I look like I'm in my late 80's?

Funny thing about Carey. When the song first came out, I was pretty young. The refrain begins with

Oh Carey get out your cane
And I'll put on some silver

And the image was very clear and strong; I liked those lines a lot, and I still do.
Joni continues

Oh you're a mean old Daddy, but I like you

And I have to say, as an 11 year old I just didn't get that. A few years later the whole song came into focus for me. It's a great lyric.

The wind is in from Africa
Last night I couldn't sleep
Oh, you know it sure is hard to leave here Carey
But it's really not my home
My fingernails are filthy, I got beach tar on my feet
And I miss my clean white linen and my fancy French cologne

Oh Carey get out your cane
And I'll put on some silver
Oh you're a mean old Daddy, but I like you fine

Come on down to the Mermaid Café and I will buy you a bottle of wine
And we'll laugh and toast to nothing and smash our empty glasses down
Let's have a round for these freaks and these soldiers
A round for these friends of mine
Let's have another round for the bright red devil
Who keeps me in this tourist town

Come on, Carey, get out your cane
I'll put on some silver
Oh you're a mean old Daddy, but I like you

Maybe I'll go to Amsterdam
Or maybe I'll go to Rome
And rent me a grand piano and put some flowers 'round my room
But let's not talk about fare-thee-welIs now
The night is a starry dome.
And they're playin' that scratchy rock and roll
Beneath the Matala moon

Come on, Carey, get out your cane
And I'll put on some silver
You're a mean old Daddy, but I like you

The wind is in from Africa
Last night I couldn't sleep
Oh, you know it sure is hard to leave here
But, it's really not my home
Maybe it's been too long a time
Since I was scramblin' down in the street
Now they got me used to that clean white linen
And that fancy French cologne

Oh Carey, get out your cane
I'll put on my finest silver
We'll go to the Mermaid Café
Have fun tonight
I said, Oh, you're a mean old Daddy, but you're out of sight
The blood-dimmed tide is loosed, and everywhere
The ceremony of innocence is drowned;
The best lack all conviction, while the worst
Are full of passionate intensity.--Yeats

Ray, I believe you are confusing Joni Mitchell with Joan Baez. Dylan and Joan had a relationship back when Dylan first went to New York.

Baez's "Diamonds and Rust," about her relationship with Dylan, is one of my favorites. I think it's come up in other threads; I'm having a deja vu moment. I also like the Priest cover.

Guess they forgot to tell Bill Buckley.

I noodled out a version of Case of You for the guitar, pretty close to the dulcimer original. Course there's no chance of singing along with it...

If we are going to do the gay circuit we can change the name to Nosher and the Bear.

I'd need a change of name for that circuit. Santa, you might need a wax.

Speaking of waxing, any updates on your couch freeloader?
