I have found that if you do some searches here on the Café, there are some amazing book recommendation and marketing courses available that will be worth the small investment of time and money.

In addtion to the books and courses alluded to, just reading through the posts in Tricky Business, and the other discussion areas for Table Hopping, etc, will reveal substantial information on accomplishing your goal. Also, below I've added a link to Benji Bruce's video blog on this subject and also one from Brian Campbell that focuses on working in Restaurants, but some of the concepts may transfer to what you want to do.
http://www.paidtoperform.blogspot.com/ http://www.penguinmagic.com/showbusiness.php http://www.success-in-magic.com/freearticles.htm Lastly, search the web and/or check with your local brick and mortar magic store if your location has one. You may be able to find a local magician from whom you can learn some of the "tricks of the trade"...pun intended. I'd not recommend that you pay someone else to market your talent. At the beginning stages, you may just want to create a free web site and post your pics and write a little about what you do. Check other magician sites for examples. Once you've created your site, go to vistaprint.com and order some business cards. Use these two tools to talk to the decision makers at places you'd like to work. I wish you the best. |

I would start by getting some top notch promotional materials. Pictures, websites and perhaps some short video clips.
Then send it off to prospects. |

Ok here are my 2 cents worth
To many times we look for marketing strategys before we have a marketing PLAN so I would HIGHLY advise building a marketing plan or hire someone who builds them for small businesses (cough cough I do this) things you need to keep in mind as your building your marketing plan is 1. Who is your target market. NO- it isn't EVERYONE.. the more focused you can get for a market the better effect the marketing will have. It's the difference between multi million dollar COKE advertising and shoe string budget Marketing.. Narrow your market down to what will make the highest profit margin NOW.. 2. Brainstorm and figure out YOUR CORE differences.. What makes you different from everyone else 3. Build marketing materials that will educate your potential clients... 4. Establish a lead generation system.. Website, Mobile Marketing list, mailing list, EXC... (I do all of this as well) 5. Automate your sales process (I now outsource my bookings and pay a soccer mom 20% for what she books me.. using managersal.com) 6. Build a marketing calendar and LIVE BY IT RELIGIOUSLY. these are the basic steps in doing all of this.. each step has a ton of work, but the idea is build the plan then use techniques and strategies to implement the plan.. it will help you be more successful if you need help figuring out the ideal client Michael Port - Book yourself solid Hope this helps some

Hey MagicJac you definitely don't want to pay a marketing company to market your services because they don't know how to do it. And you definitely want to get Michael Port's "Book yourself solid." And get Jeffrey Gittomer's "The Sales Bible."
I don't do kid shows but I know several entertainers in my area who do them full time. Get listed in the phone book (both online and in the real book) and work on your SEO marketing so you show up as number 2 or 3 in google (most people do not click on number 1). When people type in "(city) magician" then you should come up. Be sure to work on your perceived value. Your perceived value determines how much you can charge and whether people want to book you in the first place. Increase your perceived value by being (or acting like) an in-demand performer. The 3 things you NEED to do to make someone want something are: 1)make it scarce...2)show that other people want it...3)make them work for it |

Not sure if this has been mentioned yet, but try LinkedIN, Facebook, Twitter and any other social networking sites.

I tried all the "static" forms of marketing and the results were less than exciting in the current economy. Magazine ads, web sites, and mailings used to make my phone ring off the hook. The phone became quiet a couple of years ago. I knew I had to do something different. What made my phone ring again is what I call pro-active marketing. I now use telemarketing to potential clients and I also get myself in front of potential clients. What better advertising is there than presenting your abilities in front of those who can use your services? I am doing more benefits than I ever have before, but I also have joined the local Chamber of Commerce and that has already paid for itself many times over. The Chamber has many networking events that I attend to include a breakfast where I have a minute to perform a brief effect and pass out my materials, and a lunch where I can set up a small table to do the same. My return on investment has been excellent and my actual investment has been relatively small.
Just a suggestion, but it is working well for me. Charlie |

Benji,
position 1 in a Google search phrase gets the MOST traffic and the numbers drop DRASTICALLY down the page with less than 1% clicking spot 10 30% of clicks goto PPC and LOCAL (If the map is present) 70% goto the 10 organic listings with over 55% going to the 1st organic listing.. 55% of ALL traffic goto the 1st one.. and the #'s drop as you go down the page keep in mind with all the FREE information about SEO there is TONS of misinformation and tons of JUNK out there like (submit your site monthly) that doesn't work and isn't based on testing.. as far as hiring a marketing company.. I agree don't hire them to do it for you.. most marketing companies don't have a clue.. and could never give you enough leads to justify the cost.. a marketing consultant on the other hand that will help build a marketing PLAN for you to implement and then coach you on getting qualified leads.. that is worth it for someone without a background in marketing and running a small business. It will help them save THOUSANDS in trial and error.. to many people spend WAY to much money in marketing by throwing money at all these techniques and marketing systems without a PLAN... you need a PLAN that lays it all out... and if you don't have a clue on how to build that plan then you need a expert to help build it.. having the plan will save you money and time, and get you pointed in the right direction..

Mike you might be right but I heard otherwise. And it doesn't bother me because being number 1, 2, 3 or 10 on google isn't how people in my market buy.
But for MagicJac, you definitely want to increase your ranking if you're in the family market. You should find Eric Paul's information because I heard he was great in that market. |

MikeClay Special user Atlanta GA 761 Posts |
I keep meaning to get Eric Paul's stuff to check it out (I buy almost EVERYTHING internet marketing related)
My mindset for it.. why stop at 1 spot... work till ya take 5 or 6 or 8 if your Carl Woody of Joyset entertainment in Greenville (search for Greenville balloon guy) hehe I'm proud of my students when they do well... Benji you should look into Mobile marketing to see if it might be a viable option for you.. or at least a mobile business card I love em

Mike, are you saying you have more than 1 website listed in the top 10 of google in your area? Is this possible?
Also, how does one become your student? I might be interested in learning more abou tthis. |

Carl is one of the few clients I have that I'm not under a STRICT non disclosure..
most don't want their competition knowing who does the work.. but yeah in the entertainment industry you can usually take over the majority of a page it's all about knowledge.. we have a 3 day workshop coming up next month if your interested shoot me a email at Michael.clay@gmail.com it's not cheap but we guarantee an increase in business over 3 months.. we limit how many can come so we get a lot of one on one time

For those who are talking about buying Eric Paul's materials, just a reminder that they are no longer available. You'll have to track down used versions of his products.
No one took over ownership of his company when he passed away last December. The rights were not resold. The one exception is the 2009 Super Conference DVD set, that Julian Franklin and Brad Ross bought the rights to, and are selling. http://www.EricPaulDVDSet.com - Donald P.S. MagicJac - I don't see them mentioned on this thread, but you might want to be aware of three other magic marketing people out there, with helpful products & e-mail "tips" newsletters: Jack Turk: http://www.magicmarketingcenter.com/ Brad Ross: http://www.makemagicmoney.com/ Jim Snack: http://www.success-in-magic.com/
