I spent all last week at Sean Bogunia's, helping to finish the DVD for CupWow. Up until now, we've mainly just shown the dice stacking routine with it. But, I wanted to show that you can do a lot more with it than that. So, we took some of the DVD footage and made this demo video.
It looks like it'll be ready to be released next week. All that's left to do is have enough made and ready to start shipping them out. Let me know what you think. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-Rr9zuJsGEI Ron Jaxon |

Hi Ron,
It looks great! I especially like the color changes. Has great potential for a totally different chop cup routine. Hope all is well with you. Jay |

Thanks, guys. I'm prouder of this one than I am of anything I've worked on before. It's great when two magicians are just hanging out and come up with an idea, and it ends up better than we initially hoped it would.
Some have asked questions about it, so I'll just answer some of them here. It'll come with the gimmicked cup, putty to make the balls (this is some neat stuff, and you can use it for other things), a magnetic ball that has been pre-tested, the three cubes you see in the dice stacking, a battery and, of course, the instructional DVD that will show how to use it and a variety of tricks and moves. One thing we where careful about when making the DVD is we didn't want this to be viewed as a particular trick. Like the standard chop cup, this isn't a "Trick" in itself. It's a utility that allows you to do a variety of effects. So in the DVD, I don't really teach full routines. Instead, I teach all the moves I've come up with, and you can make your own routines. Having said that, everything you see in the video is taught in the DVD. I figured there are many chop cup routines out there. They can be done with CupWow, but the moves are cleaner, such as when you dump the ball from the cup to your hand. With a chop cup, you have to fake that action. With CupWow, the ball really falls into your hand. The routine I did in the video with the three green balls is basically a Benson Bowl routine, but you don't have to hide the ball with your hand. It's just the one ahead principle. So, routines that can be done with it are already out there. Let me know if you have any questions. They said it should be ready some time next week. Ron Jaxon |

Ron, would you be able to stack the cups (ala cups and balls?) - Scott

Not really. That was planned and experimented with, but it created a problem with the gimmick. You can sort of stack them into a tower, but they don't really nest. In other words, a cup on top of a cup will be as tall as two cups.
The nature of the gimmick allows for some really clean multiple cups routines, though. Just different than tradition methods. Just to give you an example, picture this: Using 3 cups and one ball (let's say the ball is white) to do a super clean three shell and pea game routine. It can all be done one-handed and surrounded. Then at the end, with no sleight of hand, there is now a different colored ball under each cup, and the white one is gone. It would be nice if they could stack, but unfortunately, that just didn't work out. Ron Jaxon |

If any of you have any questions about CupWow, feel free to ask them. Here, PM or email.
The DVD is finished as far as editing goes. So, next Thursday is the day we are aiming to release. They'll only be available from my site and Sean's site at first, but it'll take a couple of weeks for them to hit other dealers. I'm still having fun practicing with it. I hope all of you who get one like it, too. We covered the basics in the DVD, but as I said, feel free to contact me about it anytime if you have any questions. Ron Jaxon |

Ron,
LOVED the shots of what you did with the Fearson hook-up. May shoot you a few PMs once I get to play with it a bit... Scott |

Sure, anytime.
We debated about including those clips in the DVD. I mean, we're not going to teach how to do Fearson's hook up, but those who know it will understand what's happening. But when I watched it on video, I realized how cool it looked because the cup covers all angles and makes it seem more impossible. On a side note, if anyone does do any of that with a routine, don't over do it. In a chop cup type routine, I could see maybe making the ball roll in or out of the cup once, and maybe float in or out once, but that's all I'd recommend. I'd just use it as a little visual surprise. It does get reactions, too. I did it at a bar the other day. Was kind of a standard chop cup routine, but when I made the ball float from the table to the cup, it got really strong reactions. Ron Jaxon |

OK...order went in this morning!
I think the biggest danger with this effect is the "too perfect" theory. Simply moving the cup on and off the balls to make them multiply and/or change color points to a gimmicked cup.... Jonathan -- thanks to the pointer to Copin's routine. I have a bunch of his other works, but had forgotten all about this... |

That's a good point Scott.
When we where shooting the DVD I kept thinking about the fact that in a real life performance, rather then a video shoot for a camera, I'd do it a little differently. In other words I'd put the cup down, pause or patter, then pick it up rather then just up and down really fast. I'm thinking it might be nice to do a quick visual jump once or twice in a routine as a sort of kicker. The "Retention vanishes" as I call them can be done over and over. Such as in the video when I dump from cup to hand or grab ball from table under the cup. But I agree you shouldn't over do the visual jump from cup to cup like I did in the video. When you get yours let me know if you have any questions. Ron Jaxon |
