Hey Craig:
As a learning source, what do you prefer? Books or dvd's?
Thanks,
Hansel!

Another good question!

As a general rule I prefer a good book, however I cannot resist watching a DVD either especially its a performer I enjoy watching.

When I first got into magic there were very few video tapes (god, I'm getting old!!) and therefore I spent several years just learning from books. What I like about books is that I can imagine the routine playing however I want and then practice it and make sure that the routine comes across like I want it to. With a DVD I find myself a lot of the times performing the routine like the performer on the DVD and I struggle to inject my own personality, In the past I have learnt a routine from a book and then years later watched the performer actually perform it and it is totally different to how imagined it would look and therefore different to how I am performing it.

On the flip side I have dismissed routines in books in the past as they have not come across very well only to actually see them being performed and finding out they are brilliant. DVD is an excellent medium to put across difficult sleight of hand which can be hard to follow in a book (rubber band magic is a great example).

I think the best solution to buy books and DVD's and make sure you are not limiting yourself to just one learning resource. Ultimately that is the best way to ensure that we grow as performers.

I'm a Book lover. Most of the material I learn and perform come from books.
Many times I found myself doing a complete set of close up magic directly from "Carneycopia" or "Apocalypse"...and you hit right on the nail, the books permit yourself to imagine the routine in the way that you perform and not in the way of the creator perform.
Now I need to confess that sometimes I'm tempted to watch a dvd, and yes I learn many routines from dvds. In this era a dvd is inevitable.
Is a transition process but still I'm in love with my "Art of Astonishment" books Smile
