Kondini - How would you compare the one that I made to Cannon's?

Not having used yours it would be impossible for me to comment.
Check out their site and I bet someone will have one of theirs within spitting distance of where you live so go look see. Pretty sure others on here could chime in who have a Cannons as well. |

Just comparing their website description to mine, they are fairly similar. Both are stainless steel chains with smooth welds. Theirs is "over 3 feet long" (I suspect 37") and mine was custom cut to the length that I wanted for the size of my wrists (about 32"). Their links are 1 1/2" and mine are 1 1/4". They use 2 rings ring and I use 2 shackles which, in my opinion, looks bulkier and less dog-chainy than the rings.
Their price is $58 shipped which includes the secret to the trick. My cost to build was $14. |

Hey!
My question was simply something I was thinking at the time. I tend to think out loud. And type whilst I do. I'll be honest, I very rarely perform a SC escape. Its always something I felt was too obvious. Too "propy". But this thread has got me thinking that maybe I just need the right routine for it. Hence the question: "Would you use a SC escape in the same show as a cuff escape". I'm not taking a dig at the effect. Just curious to hear from people who do this regularly. How they do it. And most importantly what are the audience reactions.

Chain on, thread 2 heavy chains through each arm loop at elbow level, fasten 2 large monster trucks to ends of chains, count down, plenty of revs, off they go, tearing your arms off as the torn appart escape.
Add an overhead black bag. Good stunt for large arena,,,easy to do,,,,safe. The timeing is the most important thing, you will know what I meen after trying it out. |

Its done with pencil crayon, felt tips and a bit of wax crayon as well! Its not too bad – most of the colour is inside the lines – which are a bit ropey to be honest – they look more like a big blob on a stick. Any way – the canvas coast me £15 the easel I got for £25, the “artists consumables” cost me about £6 (but I still have most of them left so can bash out a few more at a later date). So cost me about £45 give or take a bit! Then there were these other ones by some old artist with one ear and his sold for $53.9 Million (plus shipping). Not saying that yours in not good – not seen it ….. but I think that just comparing the specs is not necessarily going to give an idea of how it handles etc. How long did it take you to make? Cus I don’t think that you included time taken in to the equation? Unless you are really cheap per hour! Also what experience have you put in to it? I’m not saying that you are wrong to have done it …… I like making stuff! But I also understand Kens point – he is including his time – he does make some stuff himself (his murkins are second to none – so now you know why his is bald!) and there are things that you can do yourself hell you can do anything you want by yourself! I think Kens point about not saying x is better than y unless you have used htem both! I would like to say that Aida Yespica is better than say than Catherine Zeta-Jones …… but as I have tried neither I cant! |

Dave,
I think your painting comparison is a little over the top. The monetary ratio is way off. Compare your £45 painting to a £185 painting and we'd be in the same ballpark. Like I said, I was just comparing the website description (and picture) to mine since I don't own the Cannon version. So it's fair enough to say that one can't claim superiority without a hands-on comparison. I'm at Lowe's for personal reasons all the time, so the time/cost of going to the store is negligible. The time it took to pick out the chain, have it cut to size, and get two shackles was maybe 10 minutes... at most. Assembly time was probably no more than 2 minutes. I had to guess where the 2nd shackle should be located and then adjust it once. For my 12 minute investment to equal to cost difference ($44), I'd have to be charging $220 per hour. Since I don't, I saved money. Had I not already known the secret to the escape, I probably would've bought one from Cannon because, I assume, they're selling the secret along with the props. So, in the end, it's probably unfair to compare my build costs to their product that includes the prop and secret. But here's my justification for the comparison... Since my options were to build or buy (and no one will sell just the prop without selling the secret - that I'm aware of), it ends up being my cost versus their price. My cost won. |

For those wanting to buy a pro version...
How does the Cannons version compare to the Malloys? http://www.malloymodernmagic.com/chain_escape.htm PS- Great looking SCE, Brady...just not sure what I think about the shackles. On the one hand, they do seem more rugged than the rings, but as others have mentioned, the fact that they are screws seems like they would hint at a method to the audience (even though it's not the case).

Roslyn's question tweaked a thought.
Don Viano created a show called Houdini Lives Again. He played this show without change for 20 years in the same venues. After he retired, I started doing the show. Don opened with kids on stage holding a cloth while he did the Keller tie and then the SC escape. My thoughts mirrored Roslyns' so I soon took those out and went on to the "professional "stuff. I soon realized that this change weakened the show. Doing these trivial escapes while amusinf the kids, helped establish the character. Don was a fun guy to be on stage with. So when he wanted 6 adults to come up for the handcuff act, They did not hesitate. Later when Don was doing the guillotine or the Chinese Water Torture, the audience was seriously engaged and concerned. This nice guy was in danger and they cared. After I figured out the importance of the opener, I put them back in. Viano2 |

Hmmm... Now that's something to seriously think about. Cheers for the input Viano2.
I always felt that each escape I did had to almost prove my pro ea status. But amoungst all that I forgot that the audience need to care about me before they care about the escapes. A school boy error, but one that weakens your show when made. Will be sure to put that right. On a different note, you say Don opened with the Keller tie and the sc. Did he do both in the same show or alternate it between shows? Or do you mean he performed them at the same time? Thanks again, Ros

Thanks Seth. Not much more than a few hardware items. I was pleasantly surprised to find something at the home improvement store that looked good (IMO) and functions well.
