Friends,
I had the distinct pleasure of checking out an advance issue of Joshua Quinn's new booktest "Word To Your Mother". This opportunity was not because I was deserving, but rather because I frequently annoyed Joshua about it's release (since reading of it's inception in his 2008 release "ParaLies"). In my most sincere opinion, this booktest from Joshua will be the standard by which others will be measured in the coming future. I think this is the best "ordinary appearing" booktest for "word/information" effects on the market. Here are some reasons: 1. You have options regarding it's cover and appearance (even an option to design your own). One drawback to some booktests has been a horrid sense of style in cover design. While this can be overcome, it is nice not having to do so. I have some background in design concept formulation and the lack of style has irked my sensibilities. 2. It is the best application of the U.F. Grant method, of which, I am aware. Why? You can have someone select a word from any page and then you begin by revealing two "thought-of" letters from that word, before using whatever dodge you like (which is common to the U.F. Grant method). This is genius. 3. There is an added feature that allows the performer the flexibilty of incorporating his "Chunneling" procedure as well (those who have read "ParaLies" will be privy to what this is). Suffice it to say, that "Chunneling" is a fun, practical and amazing tool that Joshua has decided to feature in "WTYM". I am grateful that he has done so. 4. If one is wise and crafty (and thick of wallet), several copies can be used to perform the "Hoy Booktest" (not to be confused with Hoy's "Bold Booktest"). The former requires several books and allows a participant to name any page and you can reveal a thought-of word or phrase on the first line (or any) that they are looking at. It is sneaky and wonderful. Keep in mind that you would need to invest in at least two copies of "WTYM" for this to work. I am sure Joshua would appreciate you doing so. (Nota Bene': Be sure that you check to see which ones will work together, some are slightly different formats and page lengths). If it reads as though I am excited about this booktest, it is because I am. I have been eagerly waiting Joshua making this available to the rest of us (you and me), and now it is nearly complete. Last note: There will be several versions of this (designs, etc) and will also have one mini-sized one which will work similarly, but will look like those small "Quotation books" found in popular bookstores. He will offer indentical looking un-gimmicked ones, for you to give away should you need to impress that CEO, agent or reporter. Shortly, more information will be available here: http://www.mentallyimpossible.com/booktests Impressive stuff! With regards, Sean |

Sean, thanks so much for the kind words. But as usual, you're too modest; I sent you an advance copy because you were deserving and annoying.
To fill in a few details, here's how the effect plays out. You begin by handing the book to a spectator, after which you can turn your back if you like; from then on you never need to see, touch or go near the book (or the spectator) again. You then have the spectator open the book to any page, and mentally choose "any" word. (All right, it's not literally any word, but you probably would have guessed that; it's any word that's not trivially short, but not impractically long either. Framed correctly, it will be remembered as a choice of "just about any word.") Once she has one in mind, she closes the book and puts it down. Only then do you turn to face her again. To begin the revelation, you ask her to focus on any letter in the word she's thinking of. Like the word selection itself, this is a purely internal, genuinely unknowable choice. Nonetheless, you're able to reveal the thought-of letter in the cleanest possible fashion, with nothing written down and no other compromise; she just thinks of a letter, and you tell her what she's thinking. Next, with equal directness, you correctly reveal the approximate position of the chosen letter within the word. Then with identical cleanness, you reveal the next letter in the word. You follow this by revealing one more letter as well as its position. You're then free to finish the revelation however you like – reveal the entire word, or continue the letter-at-a-time procedure, or any other way you prefer. That is the main revelation. There's also a secondary revelation, which uses my "chunneling" technique. It plays as follows: The spectator chooses a word from any page. (This selection isn't quite as clean as the other one, but the sheer number of free choices that follow it will more than make up for this.) Like before, she focuses on any letter in the word. However, rather than revealing the letter, you ask her to use it as a sort of mental springboard to think of a different word entirely – one that she didn't read in the book, but that exists only on her mind. She then thinks of a letter in this new, unknown word, and repeats the process, using it as a springboard to think of yet another new word. This can be repeated a number of times, cycling through a range of genuinely unknowable words. Yet at the end, you're able to reveal her merely thought-of word, again in the cleanest and most direct way; she just thinks of the word, and you tell her what it is. As for the books themselves, I'm excited that I'll be able offer some options never before available in a book test. For starters, as Sean said, it will be available either in a full-sized novel edition, or in a mini-book edition. The mini version comes with an ungimmicked, fully examinable duplicate book which can be switched in, handed out, and given away if you like. (Yes, refills will be readily and affordably available.) And the novel edition will be available with customizable covers, titles and authors. There will be eight "preset" covers to choose from, representing a range of book genres – general fiction, romance, mystery, "chick lit," etc. You can choose the one you want when you order. Alternately, if you're inclined and able to design your own cover, you can; I'll send you the specs, you send me the finished artwork, and I'll have the book printed with your cover (and your title/author on the interior) and delivered to you. (Naturally your artwork will remain your intellectual property, and won't be shared with anyone else.) Finally, if you'd like an exclusive custom cover but lack the means to design it yourself, I can design one to your specifications – though I'll clarify from the get-go, that option won't come cheap. Obviously I'm as biased as a person could be, but I honestly believe this offers the most direct, realistic, compromise-free, "inside their head" single-word revelation of any book test around. While I've been using earlier (and much shabbier) versions of it for years, I'm extremely pleased that the cleaned-up, fit-for-public-consumption version is finally about to see the light of day. I'm expecting final proof copies of all the titles in about a week to ten days, after which (assuming everything looks good) I'll start taking and filling orders. Note that there will be no pre-orders; I've seen more than enough debacles go down with those, so the day I start taking money for these will be the day I'm ready to start sending them out. Watch this space for further news...

I have Ascension, Duplicity an Paralies -- all of it is not only fantastic, usable, powerful mentalism, but the thinking behind all of it is so smart. I can't wait to add this to my collection!

Joshua's thinking behind this book-test is fantastic...
And - no - I didn't get one yet but I have the gut feeling of knowing exactly what the subtle improvements Joshua made are (besides the possibility of choosing your own cover for the book!)

Paolo, get in touch my friend. I'd love to know what your intuition is telling you.
And I forgot to mention above, the assorted titles will be available in both paperback and hardcover versions.

Do you mind if I ask, have you contacted ted re using the "mother" terminology in association with a product which uses a similar methodological germ? I know that you've taken it in a very different, and much developed direction - I see that - but I don't see why you'd like to associate yourself with the term mother. Wouldn't you prefer to differentiate yourself?

Yes, I've been in touch with Mr. Karmilovich and received his blessing. The name is actually a nod to two different "elements" that go into the effect. I realize it may give away a good deal of information about the working to people who are familiar with both elements, and recognize them from the effect description. I'm okay with that.
To answer another potential concern regarding the name: while I did not get permission from Vanilla Ice to use the phrase "word to your mother," technically I didn't need to because I didn't actually steal the phrase from him; I only sampled it.

Not only Joshua has asked permission (and Ted has graciously given it) but as he wrote, in the name of the effect itself you get major clues as to the possible Modus Operandi for such a book-test.
So, I don't really think a video is needed...

I think the above information (that I mentioned) should be plenty for people to know what they are getting. In fact, I feel I said too much (sorry Joshua)! I don't know what Joshua will be charging, but this is an incredible product that should satisfy the most discriminating mentalist. I am picky and I can't imagine another detail I would have included. This booktest will fare very well with mentalists everywhere. This has my highest recommendation!

I also received an advanced copy of this from Joshua... It is extremely portable and practical.
I like the idea that there will be several formats available which makes for many different presentations/ justifications for using a book. I too, after reading Paralies, feel that Joshua's approach regarding the revelation of letters in the word before any fishing/questions improves the method used greatly, especially when used as Joshua recommends and explains: having the spectator think of any letter in the selected word, and then revealing it. The "chunneling" aspect is also a very strong way to go...wherein you basically reveal a word merely thought of by the spectator, not a word from the book (chunneling in general is a great tool for the mentalist). The fact the book is completely examinable and can be left with the spectators as a gift is another nice touch. Overall a great booktest! |
