My marketing consultant told me that magician should not attend the phone calls from the prospects, clients or customers. If a manager or a secretary attend the calls marketing is much easier. He adds "in your case case you are the commodity. If you talk on your and your show that would be annoying to the caller. Your value is under estimated most of the time."
How many of you agree with this? My past experience is that managers laked the proffesionalism that I have to deal the customers over telephone. What is yours? |

Absolutly if the magician makes the calls then the precieved value goes down with out question.
I have experimented with ahaving a freind talke to clients and NEVER did one of them ask for a lower price nor did they balk at the price we quoted. the problem comes down to not every magician can afford to hire a manager or even just some one to make and take the calls. the other issue is then how does one combat this. I say educate the clients. I am always letting the clients that I take a personal interest in my shows ans my clients thus that is why I am calling them back. any way yes I agree that if you can afford to havea manager make the calls then you can get a bit better fee. I also believe that you can over come this with your presentaion on the pho9ne. just my thoughts sam

What I am saying is that over a 2 week period I had him call the clients back and those clients whether they booked me or not never asked to lower the price.
when I talk to clients they feel the freedom to ask if I can lower the price to which I reply NO. it was a short experiment but it proved to me that getting someone in my office to make calls was a good thing. I have made some changes to my office and they work. I have yet to get some one in here that has th killer phone skills I have but working on that as I type. did that answer the question. I jsut got back form performing this weekend at a theme park so I am not awake yet:)

Yeah... I have noticed in just a week that by sourcing out the phone work and booking work... I am seeing a higher booked % and all at or above my rate
I'm using manager sal (managersal.com) as a CRM and it is allowing me to build in phone scripts so my personal assistant (for my marketing company) is doing my bookings now.. she gave me a dirty look when I told her what I wanted to do then she asked how much I was gonna pay her but I am writing the sales scripts and giving her a range for pricing for services with that she has booked all but 1 of the last 5 calls and that one had hired someone else before we got back with them
its ok.. balloon dogs don't bite

My conclusions
* Magician should not be directly accessible to the customers before appearing for the show. * A professionally written phone script is inevitable. * The 'secretary' should be professionally trained. * Frequent evaluation and revision is important. |

When I used a caller, I would show up to coffee and people to help me unload. When I called by myself I had a hard time getting a parking space.
This falls (somewhat) under the Expert From A Far, category. Analogy: If I told my date I was great, I would get a lame stare but if an old girlfriend told her girlfriend that I was great, I would get a phone call. Get it?

Well put Jay. You have a way with words. And old girlfriends no doubt.

I agree whole heartedly, for any type of entertainer. Top line pros of any type are not easily accessible to the calling public. I think being too accessible is perceived as amaturish (now there are exceptions as with kid entertainers, etc.). Cold you just pick up the phone and call Penn or Teller, Blaine, or even some more regional favorites including comedians or singers. Not usually. I feel the perception is if there is someone (agent, manager, secretary, assistant, etc.) in line initially to field inquiries, you are perceived as a professional on a pro level or a cut above.
I haven't fielded a phone call in years, from inquiry through booking. The first time we speak is upon my arrival, and then usually after they've gone through my crew. |

Its all about perceived value. I've made several calls acting as an agent for my own show and the response is a lot different. I still prefer to engage in attraction marketing to get them to come to me rather than me going to them but having an agent or acting as one increases perceived value.

If you are going to go through the trouble of pretending to be your own agent or manager, why not hire / train someone to be your administrative assistant? They can even do it from a remote location.
It would be genuine, you'd have more time to do other essentials, and you should be able to afford it (because of the extra bookings / higher fees you can charge because of being the position to have that sort of person). - Donald

Just got my first assistant (working remotely) to answer the phone, establish a relationship, collect information, and book consultation appointments. Still working on getting the processes and technology sorted out before launch.
I've been wanting to get this happening for a while now and its great to get going on it. Will let you know in time how it's working. |

I agree with Donald. We can concentrate more on improving the show. Our precoius time should not be used for some thing an assistant can do. In Bpottom line our productivity will go up substantially.
Scott Burton, Thanks for sharing how did you achieve this |
