Hiya Gang!
As you may know, my Magic Friday column has been going on for a couple of years now and I decided, a few months ago, to start filming the reviews. My question is this: Should the video reviews be password protected? I put them on Vimeo for that very reason but am wondering if it's necessary as there would be more views on Youtube. I just don't think I wanted the public to know that magic can be learned from such various sources or that anything I performed was a "trick" per se... Thoughts? ~ jamie

It couldn't hurt I suppose. The password wouldn't have to be very hard either. Just something most people interested in magic would know anyway.

As far as I am concerned, the less magic (in terms of demos as opposed to straight performances) that is available to the public at large through services such as YouTube the better. The ability to watch a performance, purely for the sake of being able to watch a great performance -- especially when it is of one of the true "greats" -- is a boon for amateurs, wannabes, pros, the general public and for magic itself. Videos posted as demos of or promos for specific effects, if not password or somehow protected are, IMO, nothing more than exposure in most cases. The problem with many that ARE password protected is that the "password" is often so obvious (e.g., "what famous magician was best known for his escapes?") that they are "protected" only in someone's imagination.

Jamie's reviews do not disclose how the trick works, rather it is his performance and comments, similar performance to what you can see somewhere else. I don't see a problem to make the videos available without pw for people to watch, only magicians will stay the whole time, people looking for just performance or "How to" will go somewhere else.

I'd vote against password protecting. Either the password has to be difficult to crack, in which case people who want to watch for all the best reasons will get frustrated and end up moving on to something else, or else you go for a simple password that anyone reasonably proficient at google will be able to crack in ten seconds. Plus you'll get lots of people pestering you saying that they're having trouble getting access and so on, and your time can be much better spent just doing the reviews!

I really enjoy the reviews, and typing in the password is not particularly difficult. My only concern with non-password protected reviews is directed at you, not the audience. I.e., would you censor yourself or be less candid if you were worried about the information going out to a larger group? You don't reveal methods, but the reviews still feel usefully frank -- like, for example, the conversation about what the audience believes in tricks like "Tricycle." Do you think you'd be as open if you thought the audience was larger? If not, then I'd say keep the passwords.

I've always felt it was a moot point. The passwords have been so simple, I'd have a hard time understanding why someone who didn't know the answer would be interested in looking at the review.

Hi Jamie,
Personally I don’t think people will sit through a whole review of magic especially with no exposure at all. Just to let you know that this week’s ‘Wizard Product Review’ is now online on YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QQUNsn9lqRU There is also a chance to win one of the products reviewed in this week’s show. It will also be available on iTunes very soon along with last week’s episode. Just search for ‘Wizard Product Review’ and remember to subscribe. This week we had a look at iFloat, Rewind & Through The Ranks. All the best, David & Craig

Hiya Gang,
Thanks for the comments and thoughts! The password I have or all the Magic Friday reviews are rather easy but the point of that is that you would have had to arrive there from the Café and my Blog to find the question. So if you were just surfing Vimeo, you'd have no idea what the question was. But I think that bugjack has a great point about whether I'd feel so free to talk about things, without the password. So I think I may keep it. If Magic Friday loses some viewers because of it, I don't reckon that it's a big deal if I really think about it. I just cringe at the thought of magic reviews being available to the public at large. And David & Craig, I don't want to take away from what you're doing, but part of me really doesn't want anyone I perform for knowing that what I do is so commercially available. What are your guys thoughts on that? All my best! jamie http://www.Professional-Magician.com Home of the "Send Wonder" campaign

I agree with having a simple password. I wouldn't like to see your reviews on YouTube. Keep it the way it is jamie, as the old saying goes "if it ain't broke, don't fix it!"
keep up the good work! Love the Banksy bottles by the way!
