As per my earlier post, I've been experimenting with reducing the file size of the silent tracks for use with an iPod. I generate my silent tracks using Audacity. I found that by reducing the bit rate to 8 kbps and the sample rate to 24,000 kHz, I was able to create a file that is only 1.3 MB in size. That's down from 19.4 MB when using a bit rate of 128 kbps and sample rate of 44,100. I noticed no difference in the small file silent track.

Michael,
Won't lowering the bit and sample rate hurt the sound quality of the silent track? LOL. Sorry I couldn't resist. |

It's related to amplitude/volume. With silence... there is none. =) Sample rate (11khz, 22khz, 44khz...) is how often a sample is stored. It's related to frequency/pitch. With silence... there is none. =) MP3 compression bit rate (not the same as the above numbers) can be pretty darn small, too. Use the absolute smallest numbers available for sample size, sample rate, and mp3 bit rate if you want the smallest possible size. I don't remember off hand how low the values can get in audacity. |
