Hi,

Does anyone have any pics of the Siberian prison transport van that HH escaped from around 1910 (ish). Doesn't have to be the exact one just something similar.

Any info on the types of locks used etc.. Would also be great!

Thanks,

Ros

The Houdini as a spy book (cannot remeber the name of it) has a photo of a van.

There is the poster - not sure if it is still available. Mine came from Davenport's, I think.

I have my doubt's that this escape ever actually happened. Nice story though. Smile

Ros + Riley,

Keep your eyes on my blog about the cell. I have a collector in Russia right now and he will be making some comments about the cell and the cuffs. Look under the Russian pitchbook post for the comments. Here's the link.

Have your doubts, the Transport Van happened. It was very much like the Jail Cell escapes he was doing at the time. It was presented as part of a free show for the cops. He did other stuff, cards, handcuffs, then, the big challenge. There is quite a lot of material collecting at Ask Alexander about the escape from the Carette. I think I make pretty good sense of it all in "Houdini--the Key."

Think this subject has been covered here before and a link was found to a German Newspaper of the day which said it was a complete setup con.

I can't find that link to the German newspaper. Can't read German anyway. Certainly would be a bombshell to find that a Houdini publicity stunt was a "setup/con."
But, as to whether Houdini performed the escape from that Russian paddy wagon or not, the evidence is that he did.

Connolly's houdinihimself website has a very exciting blog going about Houdini in Russia.

Fascinating entries by Oleg Stepanov--admittedly, not a Houdini fan, but obviously, a magic history buff.
Houdini may have escaped from the "prison van" twice?
Anybody remember the story about Houdini calling Franz Kukol to his side at a performance and surprising his chief assistant with a ten year watch. It was such an effective, spontaneous, moment that they repeated the entire ceremony a couple of towns later. Franz was just as surprised and overcome as the first time.
