That person knows who they are, and so do some others so I won't mention his name again.

Sure, I can get every gaff I need in 808's. I already have a 10 year supply of the gaffs I need in 808's.
But it was IMPOSSIBLE for ME to get 808 Twilight Angel refills in all 52 different cards at all. And I did not want to take someone else's creation and try to get it copied myself. That would not be fair to the inventor. Even if I could get it printed, it would be at a great expense. I am no expert in those things and I would rather support the inventor, as I am a worker and not an inventor. I depend on the inventors for my material, as I love to work, and have that talent. And the inventors have their talent. So I requested the inventor to give me the option of all 52 cards in Twilight angels. Especially for Weddings, this is a great effect to walk around and do over and over. The first time I did it, the guy asked me to do it again for someone else, they liked it better than everything else I did. I did not do it because I only had 2H's and I did not want to repeat it. After a while he winked at me and said he would slip that 2H back to me and I could do it again. Me not being able to repeat ruined it. Or at least made him think I had to use that card. If I did it immediately for his other girl friend with a different card, I would have been the Master of the situation. And it probably would have been twice as amazing! All the corporate and private walk around gigs I do I repeat the same effects over and over for each small group. When I do something really good, the guests that know each other compare notes. Or they will run over to the next group to see me perform again. I usually do subtle variations, but the same major mind benders. I did not want 30 Twilight Angels in 2H all over the room. This new 809 solves that problem. After a lot of posts and correspondence, Paul's sister told me they were coming up with a solution. This is it. I would use this deck just for this effect. Yes, for the real world and real people, it IS that good. How many people use the Cardtoon deck just for that effect? Or any other deck just for one effect. To me it is worth it for the TA. Thanks again for the effort everyone. I look forward to using it in my upcoming walk around gigs. ACE http://www.jojothemagician.com

Never mind.
Like some others, I've dropped the idea of buying Mandolin's. Back to Bikes and better business practices.

I don't feel like it was bad business practice for them to make the Mandolin's.
I requested a special card that the US playing card company would not make in 808's, the Twilight Angel in all 52 different cards. I feel like the Mandolin's were made just to fill that need. Now if I am wrong, and I can get Twilight angels in all 52 different cards in 808's, someone PLEASE let me know. Prove me wrong. (And they have to be available by one deck at a time and at reasonable prices.) I've been looking for these in 808's and requesting them for over a year, and all I could get were 2H's, expensive and not even full decks. ACE

Well, I really like my mandolin ID. Enough so that I just ordered some blank mandolins and a some regulars to make up a number of R&S tricks.

I'm completely happy for all magicians who say they don't think the brand of card matters to laymen because "they don't know the difference anyway".
I just can't subscribe to that way of thinking. I think the average person would be hard-pressed to NAME a particular brand of cards....but I think they most definitely recognize a Bicycle back more readily than something else that isn't in widespread usage. For this reason, I have no interest in Phoenix decks. Nor do I care for the "grunge"-style decks produced by Ellusionist. Especially in the latter case, I find that the cards themselves are a distraction from the effect. So, I like the idea of the Mandolin cards. I haven't used a deck yet but I think the back design is similar enough that the layman will associate them with the "usual" cards they're "used to seeing". Just my opinion, Tony |

All through this thread the question of whether spectators will spot the difference between Bikes and Mandolins is raised. We need to understand that there is a difference in spectators. People who only play cards on rare occasions or never are not going to notice. Regular card players, and especially the hard core players that play every week or every day are going to notice. Will they care? I think they just might be suspicious because the cards look so much like Bikes... but aren't. They would probably be less suspicious if you used Tally Ho's or Bees.
I'm releasing a new gaffed deck before the first of the year. You will be able to buy it, if you wish, in Red or Blue Bikes, Red or Blue Tally Ho's, Red or Blue Bee's, and Red or Blue Mandolins. I really like the feel of the Mandolins, and depending on where you get your Bikes... the Mandolins may cost a bit less. USPCC definitely does have new and stringent rules about gaffing cards. I know for sure because I had a design of deck I wanted to produce and they won't do it. Paul Harris has not lied about that... or anything else I'm aware of. The Mandolin line continues to grow with Double Backs and Faces, Strippers, a Marked Deck, etc. My new deck will be an addition to that line, although it will also be available in other backs as noted above. Here is what I have heard about the mandolins, and frankly I am pretty frustrated. With USPC though not Paul Harris. USPC decided they will no longer manufacture any new gimmicked cards with bicycle 808 backs.Because of this, in an effort to give magicians a good alternative, paul Harris had the mandolin's made up so magicians could still produce gimmicked cards that would "look like" 808's.
I think this is a short sighted move for bicycle personally/ |

Why is that? Magicians make up such a tiny percentage of USPCC's customer base that it doesn’t hurt them at all. I don’t see how it is short sighted. Please explain.
Thank you. Jim |
