Are we in Spain too romantical? I don't know, what I know is we are willing to unite against exposure (in all forms). Tell me what you think:

Bravo, Mariano! Finally someone willing to do and say something important about this serious problem. I applaud you. It is an extremely well-done piece and has a very important message.

Yes, I join your fight. Yes, I will speak out against exposure every chance I get. It is time we stop saying "there is nothing we can do" and at least speak out!!!

Thank you for leading the way!

Regards,

Jim

Thank for your words. I think we have many ways to "fight" against all that, and one of them is by keeping the spirit of old times "alive" by spreading the information to the new generations. If they don't go to the books, we'll bring that feelings to them in other ways!

Who can resist being part of something special?

anyone with enough self respect or insight to see through the hype to the conformity, artistic taxation and sheer disrespect for audiences that such produces.

start by learning to keep secrets. not the trauma thing, just trust and keeping trust.

This video says it all!!!!!!!!!! Thanks Mariano!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I know that there are many guys here at the café saying that there is nothing you can do about it, but that does not mean that I like it and I keep fighting my own battle against exposure!

Great Video, well done!

I still feel there's little we can do about exposure of Magic Secrets in today's world...

But you know what they say...

A little can go a long way.

I hope it does.

Keep up the good work!

I think the message is terrible and insulting.

It's so lame that magic enthusiasts think Magic is honored by keeping secrets.
I didn't come here to tell you how this is going to end...

It gets worse TO, we have folks here who actually complain about not being able to be fooled at shows. It's as if the 'trick monkey on their back' has blinded them to the obvious notion that if you hang out where folks are working on tricks you are wont to learn all too much about what folks do when they perform tricks.

Folks, get the rabbit off your back!

If you want to learn magic, start with the Gaiman four part comic "The Books of Magic" and then make your own choice. If you truly wish to go down that path, the next stop is to read the first section of Crowley's Magic Without Tears to get grounded in where magic is for our society and then off to Bandlerland to learn about language and communication skills. From there your own intent and feedback from audiences can guide you. The cookbooks are just recorded husks, empty shells of what held magic for the inventor/performer - you need to fill in the rest and let it grow with you into your own magic.

Or you can stay focused here and wonder why it's all about getting excited about the soon to be released product that has yet to make you into the magician you imagine you could become.

The One: my girlfriend is not a magician. She says that in case she's interested in knowing the secrets, she'll look in books and specializes stores. But she does NOT want to stumble upon a TV program revealing them and ruining the illusion for all. The same goes for youtube.

Perhaps I'm going a little too far, but maybe magic exposure should be put in the same category as pornography. WHAT!!? yes. You don't see porn at 2:00 PM in normal TV (neither in youtube). It's a case of MORAL. Most people don't want to see that AT THAT MOMENT. There are specialized channels and videos if they want to. But they don't recognize the harm they are being done as spectators when they change channel and see the masked magician.

It might be instructional to film a small audience as they attend a performance and then an explanation. To watch their faces. And perhaps from that to understand. I have done this experiment in person. I feel it worth the fuss to do this at a college for a class or such and encourage those who can set it up to do so. Better to see a few sorry faces once then to pretend such is not the case for all exposed to such exhibitions.

Hey, I tried it and would prefer it not be a necessary experiment for all students. Like Milgram's findings... best recorded and not often repeated IMHO.

I dunno about "we in Spain" but that pic of you looks a lot like a picture on the cover of a small book by Lewis Ganson on Closeup Magic. Would you happen to know whose trick that is? Kind of reminds me of Finn Jon's Silver Stick. Smile

But as to exposure - isn't any book in plaintext which a non-magician could read and understand on this craft, by definition, exposure?

Okay now look back at the horse. (that's a topical joke as punctuation and to see which way you'll jump in your reply)

Making a "video response" is probably all that CAN be done about this, and for that I applaud your effort...

It's a very sad subject, revealing these secrets is similar to selling another musicians sheet music with out permission, it's as bad as pirating, it's the same type of thing as publishing all of Burger Kings recipes, or going off and starting a rester aunt with the same recipes sad, sad, sad.

Are magicians not going to sell their DVD's, books, or tricks at open-to-the-public shops (Internet or otherwise) anymore?

If not, then how do we suppose we will keep our secrets? If a random non-magician person buys a trick, ignorant of our ethical rules how can we expect to get them to understand the value of the secret. How do we let him know he is supposed to keep the secret he purchased?

I don't recall signing or reading anything before my purchases in my own collection that gave me any hint of the demands of learning the secret.

Soooooooo. We have a lot of vitriol and bitterness about something that magicians are not doing anything useful about. Unless posturing is useful.
It might make some of us feel better, I guess that's good.
Magic is doing improbable things with odd items that, under normal circumstances, would be unnessecary and quite often undesirable.
