In the purest sence, I feel impromptu work is magic that can be done with just whats there without being (obviously) set up or aranged. I think this is quite limited. Small things can be vanished or moved around with slight of hand, some sort of cups and balls effect might be possable, a patio force routine, some mentalism (although how many people have envelopes, paper, pens ect).
Packs of cards arn't that common so card tricks may not be possable. A further complication is you might be unable to pick where you perform. angles might be a problem, or there might be no table or work surface. You might have very limited controll over the audence (how near they are etc) I think people should spend at least some time thinking about this, as it helps them understand the art better.

The number of possible truly impromptu magic effects one can perform is more a function of ones skill set magically. For instance if you know how to manipulate many differing kinds of things the number of options grows. For instance I am fairly good at manipulation with sponge, billiard balls, thimbles, cards, coins, small balls, cigarettes, etc.
Now, look around at all the things that are similar to those objects: Crayons, small pencils, LOTS of things can be manipulated using thimble sleights, LOTS of things can be manipulated using coin moves and on and on and on. Coin magic alone gives one a large base to work from. There is a stunning array of things that can be done in a Mental vein with just what's at hand. It just takes thought to abstract out the principles and then apply them widely. Highly recommended resource: The Tom Mullica Impromptu Magic DVD's. Doing good Impromptu should be looked at as JUST ANOTHER SKILL SET withing the wider range of magic performance. Best,

I can do a good 10 minutes, minimum, of impromptu Magic & Mentalism in almost any setting.
No Props needed whatsoever. Although if there's anything that happens to be there at your disposal, take full advantage of it, I say... (pen, paper, coins, cellphone etc.) Like anything else, you need to approach it as a proper Act. Script it. Practise it. Rehearse it. Refine it. Look into Body Magic. Cold Reading. Hypnosis. Memory Techniques etc... Comes in really handy when you have a Technical glitch in a Show as a backup Act. You seem to not miss a beat, to the Audience and the all important Client. This has worked for me, hope it does for you too.

I have always had a preference for using 'found object'. Not only does magic seem natural and unforced, but the level of audience participation can increase. Saying, "Please hand me a couple of those coffee creamers" has a different level of anticipation than, "Please check out these four playing cards I just happen to have with me." I have one eBook raedy except for photos entitled "Sleight of the Family Stone' with dozens of effects using stones, nuts, dinner mints, etc., and more eBooks to come focues on involving multiple spectators and magic that happens in their hands -- even between their hands.
My current favorite is those little Half & Half containers because they can handle like a ball but be palmed like a coin since the lid is about the size of a haf dollar. They are already magical because the ingredients are mysterious and we have faith that dumping that gunk in a cup of coffee will taste like real cream. My collection of Sleights, Moves and Performance Modules using these gems in growing daily. Those Jelly Packets are great too, but more difficult to palm more than one.
