What is your most hated "Kid show trick"? I don't mean no tricks with knives or guns or fire..but what trick geared to children and performed by many do you truly hate or dislike? Why? and then what is your favorite trick or routine that you perform in all or most of you kid show. This doesn't have to be the best trick or receives the best response but one that you truly like to perform.

I sold my chair suspension, I stopped doing Run Rabbit Run, I also stopped doing Frady Cat rabbit, not because they don't go over well but because everybody else does them. There are a lot of magicians here that want to do the kid show tricks that everybody else does, I'm not one of those guys. I do no Wolf, Axtell, or Barry Mitchell tricks.

I love to do acrobatic silks, because very few magicians do it, and it goes over very well. I have an original ring, and rope routine that only I do, which the kids love, and it is very satisfying doing my own original material.

I love the Snake Can Routine from David Ginn. So much fun - in my case 18 often big laughs in one routine - and it plays well for little and older children and adults.

I don´t hate a trick - but I hate my big suitcase I have to carry to each performance ...

I hate card tricks for kids, (Exception Pro-Viper where the card trick is really meaningless)

I Love my Chair Suspension, Pro Viper, Barry Mitchell Routines, Arthur Stead Routines, Axtell's Drawing Board, Axtell's Meter, Axtell's Rodney Rabbit, Axtell's Bear, and Axtell's Vern the Bird.(Not all in one show)

I always do 20th Century silks, produce a Rabbit, use lots of kids, and have a variety of interchangeable tricks. My character is "The Real Magician" as labeled by the kids.

You can't do card tricks for kids, because kids today don't play cards, but I do two tricks that uses cards. I often times wonder what card manipulators will do when the kids of today grow up.

Dennis wants to be known as the real magician, and I want to be known as a different kind of magician. I do no bunnies, birds, balloons, box tricks, or puppets.

Hey Dennis where were you last Thursday night?

I have a great Chinese Sticks routine - but I hope NEVER AGAIN to hear the Chinese Sticks or Pom Sticks routine about "the tissle is now a tassle and the tassle is a tissle...".

Number one, it's not original, and number two, it's unbelievably stupid.

Good one, that is a perfect example of a trick using cards that will work for kids, and it will work just as well if the cards have animals, or colors on them, but if you try to do an ambitious card routine kids will get bored.

I disagree very strongly. "kids" doesn't exist, there is a huge variety in age and maturity levels within "kids" and a lot of them can absolutely handle, appreciate and even really like card magic. I have had a lot of success doing card magic for 9yrs old +, ...including ambitious card.

That is excluding things like cards from the mouth, color changes and various aspects of card manipulation that can be a lot of fun for any age group.

What you are saying goes against the grain of what most magicians believe. Silly Billy teaches that you must keep the kids constantly engaged through out your show. It may work for kids over 12, but kids under 12 years old will usually boo a deck of cards before you start. There may be exceptions to this rule, but after 22 years of doing kid show magic I find Silly Billy teachings to be right on.

I usually boo a deck of cards when most magicians pull them out and I'm 47.... I usually don't like card magic but I do like some card magicians.

Sorry Al but I have to disagree with you on the card tricks. When I do table hopping children often request card tricks.

It's funny you should mention Silly Billy; have you read the ambitious card routine he presents on page 114 by David Levitan? He also lists in Apendix 1 (p. 161) that at 8 years old, in general, kids "know the names of playing cards, including suits and court cards."

Al, ol' Seadog is correct in that he gives the age 9+. There are some very 'young' nine year olds and others are hipper and that is the age where one normally shifts into the more magic based show while the younger ones get more of a visual joke show. I wouldn't do a card trick for little kids but I would get a deck out and drop it or something because it falls into the joke catagory.

So both of you are correct the only question is the ages of the kids. As for those who claim they do kids shows using cards and coins and nothing else they are full of it.

To be perfectly clear, when I say I don't do card tricks or hated all card tricks for kids, it is not exactly right.

I like card tricks that are designed for kids like the story telling card trick, KIDS Kards, and routines that the focus is not on the card but mainly on the routine.

The above two, are more close-up. I love Ken Scott's three card Monte, with the Library card. (Pro-Viper II). There may be more but what I don't care for is the "Pick-a card, Lose a Card, Find a Card" lot of card tricks that have little with what kids love the most. Flashy, Colorful, Magical, Funny, etc.

Thank you for your quotes from Silly Billy, but after a good night's sleep my gut feeling is that if I try any close up magic at a kids party they will make me walk the plank matey.

Fair enough. Smile I definitely don't think they're in any way essential.
I also don't really use them in shows (except manip type stuff), but more for impromptu magic for individuals or small groups.
