I had an interesting gig on Friday night. I was hired to twist balloons at a night club for a birthday party for a gentleman in the entertainment business. Most of the gigs I work are for children, and the grown up only gigs were never in a night club situation. Some people were at first reluctant to get a balloon until they saw what I was making. I ended up making a lot of bracelets as that is what people were asking for. A magician without much flight time who was hired to work the event came up to me and asked how to approach the guests. It was difficult for him, as there was a lot of loud music, making it hard to interact with the guests and show them magic. It was a lot easier for me as the balloons people were wearing were advertising my services and people told me that they were trying to find me in the crowded night club so that I could make them something. The host was really pleased with the balloons. The only challenge I had was that the different lighting made it hard to tell the colors apart. I think I made an alligator mask with pink teeth, but I am not sure. I had to try to locatee the colors by how I load them in my bag.
Mark ( I know you work a lot of nightclubs) or anyone that has been in this situation- Do you carry a flashlight for these situations or do you just rely on knowing where you load the colors in you toolbelt/apron/bag?

On a whim, I wore a parrot hat with a palm tree to a Jimmy Buffet concert once. Everybody wanted one and I had foolishly left my balloons at home. The next year, I skipped the concert and sat in the parking lot making these hats at $20 a pop. Get the right venue and you can pull in a fortune.

Also remember that smooth 1-inch glow sticks fit easily into most balloon hat designs. Glowing hats are hugely popular in dark clubs, Fourth of July events and so on.

Hey how do you expect me to make money on a DVD if everyone asks me questions about what I do?

;)

Answer lies here:

Glow sticks really don't show in Night clubs. LED lights are better.

Here is the best price I have found:

It only takes one to light up a hat.

Mark,

I recommend your DVD's to folks all the time. I think I should have my own promo code so I can get a percentage. Smile Thanks for the tip on the LED resource. I thought about bringing some, but the ones I have were about a dollar a piece, and I didn't want to be forced to use them all up. Everyone wants a sculpture with one of those when I use them. I decided against it.

It was quite a learning experience. I didn't factor in the non-house lighting making it really difficult to distinguish between different colors in my balloon bag.

Thanks as always on recommending my DVDs ...

Yes we are working on a NightClub DVD.

LEDS for as little as 20˘ each!!! however you need to buy a container load. I buy 500 at a time for 39˘ each. Free Shipping

If they want a light I point to the $10 tip button. Night clubI get quite few $20 tips...

The head light works great on top of my bowler, I point it downward so I don't blind people with it.

If your working in a smoking environment you may want to have a trash-able rig for your balloons... cause you can't get the bar smell out of stuff.

Congratulations on your success, Steve! I've run into the same problem working at Universal CityWalk at night. All the neon signs, and especially the giant TV, cast a different light on the entire area, making it hard to distinguish which colors are which. I have been trying to carry around a small, LED flashlight when I'm working to help when I'm in doubt (I mostly take balloons from where I load them.) This, along with mints, are some of the items Bruce Kalver recommends you always have on you when performing in restaurants.

Great tips here fellas! I'm wondering if the LED's ever cause the balloons to pop? And the pricing on the link looks great; there's never been any problems with ordering from China for these? just seems too affordable to be true! Way glad I found this forum!

No they don't pop the balloons.

Only problem is the loose sets sometime get turned on and you toss away some. They are too cheap to even change the battery.

Mark,

I there much of a difference between the way approach a night club and the way you approach a restaurant? If so, will you cover this on the dvd?

I have to thank you again for being so awesome. You've made a huge difference, in both the art and business parts of my career. I owe you lunch, at least.

Alex
