Greetings,
I'm about a year into magic now. I don't make a living with it, and I don't intend to quit my day job, though I could envision doing an occasional paid show someday. I guess you'd say magic for me is an avocation, but I'm one of those who takes their hobbies very seriously. I'll tell you how it started... Sometime last summer I did some sort of spur of the moment made-up sleight of hand to make something disappear for my 5 yr old daughter. Well, she was AMAZED by that. I kept it up by occasionally pulling quarters out of her ear until one day she said, Daddy, pull a quarter out of my ear, but this time not the one in your pocket. OOOP! I knew I had to step it up a little. I went to a magic shop and explained my story. He sold me 4 sponge balls and a DVD. Pretty soon I was amazing my daughter again but also making her laugh (the funniest time was when, no matter how many times I took a ball out of my hand and put it in my pocket, another would appear in my hand, "frustrating" me to no end and causing her to laugh so hard she cried). My daughter was soon ready for more so I dug out a copy of Card College I had purchased for myself about nine years prior but never stuck it out (I've always wanted to be able to handle cards). This time I had inspiration, a reason to work at it. So I've been studying Card College and a handful of other books (Mark Wilson's Encyclopedia, Lorayne, Tarbell, etc. -- I think I have more material than I can study for the rest of my life). I put together a show for a 6 year old birthday party last April, pretty much right out of "Seriously Silly" but with a little bit of myself. It was amazing how the kids responded -- things worked just how David Kaye said they would (thanks, David!), as if on cue. I've also since done a couple of dinner parties for adults. Though I'm particularly fond of cards, now I'm also working on impromptu magic with everyday objects (coins, strings, rings, paper, etc.) while continuing to work on my card handling. Anyway, I'm really enjoying this. I get into the Magic Castle every chance I'm offered. I've been hanging around the Café for several months now so thought I'd say "hello". cheers, --David

Hi David,
Sounds like you're making rapid progress in several areas. I loved the story about your Daughter. - Mary Mowder |

Very cute story, very cool. My great-niece loves the sponge balls too, she is about the same age.
