This is only a question... I do not planned to work with animals unless I knwo 100% what to do, how to treat them, so please bear with me.
when I look at old cup and balls pictures, many magicians seem to have snakes on the table. is it possible to do wand to snake? or make snakes appear under a final load? by these I mean safe, kind, acceptable to audience? many thanks d |

Hello...I've seen a wand to snake performed before. A vanishing cane was used. I would feel, however, It might be very uncomfortable for the snake. I used to help out at the Reptile Gardens in Singapore before it closed down and from my experience on handling snakes, they're not comfortable being stretched straight.
As for final loads for the Cups and balls, I think its gonna be extremely tricky. First, finding a snake that's short. Forget about ball pythons and Rat snakes. You're looking at young whip snakes or tree snakes. Then again, handling is crucial. I also feel even loading the snake into the cup is tricky. Unless the snake fits in a smaller contraption. Which basically would be inhumane due to having to stuff the snake into a small space, than the already small cups. a cloth bag might work, but As I type this, I'm curious to see this in action. Good luck! |

I only ask for historic reasons, and I'm interested in any views

I use snakes in my shows and have for years. I can't think of a good way to be able to do that. Really small(baby) snakes can be very shy and scare very easily...so I don't think that is an option and other snakes are too large...

A problem using snakes in any load, i.e. cups and balls,is the tendancy of the snakes to utilize opposing angles to support themseves and wedge themselves into a space. It's just one of their means of movement, especially snakes that are known to be arboreal. They'll do it in solid objects as well as loose objects such as bags.

I'd be pretty scared of catching the snake in the workings of a vanishing cane and hurting it.
Now there is a historical precedent for "staff to snake", but it takes a special kind of snake Of course there are also eastern snake charmers ...
It is always darkest just before you are eaten by a grue.
