So I have to admit that I'm not a big fan of soccer. I played it in school when I was a kid till about the 4th grade and then stopped playing. Haven't given it much thought since...
For whatever reason, I've been watching the World Cup this year and I have noticed a trend. Here's my question? "Are ALL soccer players the biggest wussies (not the word I would have used but the Café would have banned me had I used the other one) on the planet? I mean seriously!?!?!?! These guys go down fast and quick and it's all about who's going to win the Oscar. They fall and grab their leg with this look of agonizing pain. I've seen football games where guys get hit and bones break and they're down for a minute, are helped off the field, and are back in the game all taped up for the next quarter... Soccer players are the biggest wimps I have ever seen... Christopher

Soccer has nothing on the NBA in the theatrics department.

Christopher, I think you missed playing when older and with the game been on the line.
Soccer is very physical, and the only padding is the shim guards, nothing else, and players use cleats, when you played you use your elbow, your head, hands and so on, people get hurt. Imagine that you are jumping for the ball and behind you a guy of 80Kg is jumping on you with his elbow in your head, it is not a pretty picture and happen everytime that 2 players go for an airball. So it is more physical than people that never played thinks, but also has players that will use any chance to get a favorable call. Referees now that, but sometime they make mistakes. This is based on my experience playing soccer |

Although you are right about the exertion Pablonius, there is more to it than that. As a kid I played soccer and hockey and (North American) football. In soccer, if somebody gets his boots in your legs you go down and look to the referee with a WTF expression. In hockey and football, your teammates all think you're a jerk and a sissy if you do that. There is nothing more glorious in hockey than scoring a goal as you are dragged to the ice--that makes you a star. The hockey player who abandons the puck looking for a call gets no respect from anybody. I've never played rugby, but it seems more like hockey and football than like soccer in this respect.

The coach for the US team commented on that subject, he said they all them floppers. They don't even get touched and they hit the dirt in pain.

I watched the 2nd half of the USA v Ghana match, and some of the Ghana players were disgraceful in their dives and fake injuries.
Insult to injury, they also played better than the USA. Christopher, sometimes dive or fake injury to extend time, or to give players a rest. Other times to encourage the referee to give a free kick in an advantageous area of the field. If a fake injury or dive and draw a yellow card on the victim, the victim must play more carefully (and possibly, less effectively), as 2 yellow cards (in the World Cup) equal a suspension from the next game. Its all tactics and it is cheesy, yes. However, the same kind of crap goes on in other sports. Ever been in a pile-up in a football game? My cousin had his playing career ended when a frustrated cornerback twisted his foot in ways it doesn't normally go while in a pile-up. It is easier to see things in soccer.

All I know is I am in Madrid right now, and I would not dare say that to anyone LOL.
I mean the TGI Friday's had to change the color of the uniforms because of employess getting beaten up after games near the stadium thinking they supported an opposing team. Plus, ya gotta give it to them man, they throw one heck of a riot.

Christopher, there is some merit in what you say, but it's not the whole story. As has been addressed above, the faking of injury is usually done to gain an advantage, whether that be earn a free-kick, waste time or get a competitor booked (yellow card). I think there are few in the game who wouldn't disagree on principal with such practices.
However, I think that many people underestimate the level of contact in football, and the damger of the impacts seen. Injuries not uncommon to other sports are often seen, ranging from torn ligaments up to clean breaks of legs. You must remember that the only way to make a tackle in football is using your, ahem, FOOT! And a foot with a studded boot on the end of it is a dangerous weapon. Players are, with the exception of a wafer thin shin pad, completely unprotected. They also do not do impact training. They are generally very finely tuned endurance athletes, hence their lack of bulk for absorbing impact. Middle distance runners are probably pretty wimpy too, don't you think? Anyways, for your viewing pleasure, this is the first one that came to mind. Christopher,
To further your appreciation for the game, find a clip of highlights of the Netherlands v. Brazil game. Watch the highlight of Brazil's goal, the first of the game. To me, the pass that was made to the scorer was one of the most beautiful passes I have ever seen. Watch it and think about why someone might consider that a thing of beauty.

What is this soccer you all speak of? Are you sure you don't mean football? That fine english game where the ball is repeatedly kicked with one's foot?

Japan and USA are prime examples of people who are getting MESSED UP by other teams and just stand right back up. I love watching replays of people who get tapped on the shoulder and just fall in pain. But I can definitely attest to getting kicked in the shin and it hurting like heck. Though, you CAN numb it after lots of training - muay thai people do that, and it looks wicked painful, lol.
