I have no clue what Necklace Quest is, I think I know what collard is.....
Most things can be done for kids it is really how you present it, which is based on the age of the kids. You already know the 'magic' that older kids would like so I'll tell you what I like for lil' kids. Opener: simple silk vanish (this is more than just a vanish and viola, it establishes the show will be fun). Color changing laces (for older little kids because they think they got you but you get 'em, a sucker effect). The Envelope, again for older kids (you don't see but they see effect). Closer: Finally restoring a napkin that I've failed a few times during the show (kids really love this for some reason). Blendo, gotta love blendo. In the middle you can put in: Rope routine, ring routine (younger the kids the sillier), any number of silk routines like 21st Century Silks or crystal tube, other rope stuff, monte with coloring books for older kids, color book routine for children, sponge balls or bunnies, puppet, toss in a card trick for the adults I do the phil deck (aka oscar), hat tear. The list goes on and on. Gags: There are too many to list but some that are considered routines but are not would be the silver scepture, various wand gags, mouth coil from kid or whatever. Props if you must: hippity hop bunnies, squared circle, run rabbit run, things like that, different ones are available from the well made ones that kids like that are reasonably priced to the well made ones that kids like that will cost you a looooot of money. You get the point, there is a lot of stuff out there. Think about how you can alter the presentations to work for the kids. If you can't screw it up, drop it, get confused by it, have it been seen by everyone but you, scare you, or so forth then don't bother with it. For example I use a square circle to dump items into and every so often I look in it and pull it out and show the stuff is missing. I have a bird puppet (cloth, not expensive) that I put on top of it as if in a nest so the puppet can watch the kids and I will grab that puppet to go after a kid and...I dump my TT or other items in the puppet! That way I don't go near the pockets and the kids are use to the puppet being grabbed. Lastly, do not film yourself and put it on youtube. |

Yeah....he is a guy with a lot of good information and try to avoid the solid sales pitch. Ginn has a lot of information, oddly he is not full of big props and back drops and tends to work out of one case...hmmm....interesting.
One thing, guys like Ginn and Riser are very knowledgable but a lot of people, myself included, find them to be rather gentle and low key in their style where as I am more to the Silly Billy style. It is a Southern vs ROW thing, and as a Southerner I get it but I am more jolt cola to Ginns cup of milk. I'd go if in the position to do so. |

I attended the Kidbiz Live event back in September (I'm biased because I am a DG fan) but it really was worthwhile and the price isn't that bad to hear from one of the legends of Kidshows.
Not only that - you'll most likely rub shoulders with some other performers in your area who are already performing for kids... great time to connect. |

Yeah I was talking to one of the owners of a shop out here and he told me the same advice, looking forward to it.

Yeah but as you'll come to realize a lot of those who are experts here don't seem to have ever performed for kids before. I try to avoid this area cuz it drives me nuts. There is at least one other section I never, ever, let myself in because with in its evil confines reside the worst of the worst, I can't even type the name of the section without wretching. Last convention I went to I hung out with a couple guys and was happy I didn't have a gun.

Ok well just to update you guys on my journey. I attended my first Kidbiz Work shop this weekend by David Ginn.
Prior to going to this I have read and heard that he was really good but outdated, now for this being my first time I didn’t think he was all that outdated. I actually learned allot of things from the four hour work shop. He showed us his act with breaks in-between to explain and honestly trying to think from a kids perspective allot of his effects were really good. I bought his Rabbits routine. He performed it with a girl and we all laughed which was what I was looking for something that involved spectator participation, costumes gags and allot of laughter. I also love his fortune telling fish that he sells at the end of the show for a dollar idea. So far other than trying to find routines that I would Love to perform not just perform for kids but that allow me to enjoy the time I am performing as well as the kids are, I just need to learn to allow myself to let go and be silly and childlike. It’s in me and I do cut loose but being military it’s hard sometimes. I’m not sure if I want to try to develop a character for my shows or try to just be a sillier me. Oh also bought Mccomical Deck because I believe it will play for families as well as kids. Now I was thinking when it comes time to redo my business cards I’m not sure if I should have two sets. One for kids and one for adults or my third option which I’m leaning very hard on is advertising myself as a FAMILY entertainer oppose to just being a kids magician.

You must be in Austin or here in SA. I was going to be at the SA workshop but I booked a show at the last minute so I couldn't be there. It sounds like it was good.
I think the idea of marketing yourself as a family entertainer is a good one. As far as trying to be a sillier version of yourself.. it's certainly possible to do that, but it takes some time to loosen up in front of people enough to embrace your inner goof. I might suggest developing a character. When I went back to perfroming after an absence of a few years, I found that I had developed some stage fright. So I developed a character, a sort of absent minded, nervous professor type. This worked well for me because I could perform the character and was made far less nervous by portraying a nervous nerd character. Over the years I allowed the character to 'thin down' a little and let more of my natural self in. Now, after twenty something years of kidshows, the character of "The Astonishing Mr. Pitts" and my real self are basically one and the same. It took a lot of parties to gain this confidence though, and having a more contrived character at fisrt was a big help getting to this point. |

Mr. Pitts that is hilarious I was thinking a simmilar kinda guy. Ok black slacks, vest maybe a wild tie and old BCG(MILITARY TERM) for huge glasses. Walk in with my suit case open it up, pull out a fish tank with my pet chester the gold fish I never leave home with out it and then continue with the show. But I get what you mean I get stage freight from time to time and its all just a matter of messing up, but then there are times where you cant knock me of my game. Strangest thing. My brother is on Broadway "In The Heights" and I have been perfomrming since I was 14 (31) now but it comes and goes. where are you out of? I w3ish I could attend the convention in Austin in September but unfortunaly ill be in Jersey getting married! ALREADY RUINING MY LIFE SHE IS!!!! lol just kidding.

I'm in San Antonio.
I'm thinking your idea is good, maybe even give him a little 'military' in his demeanor if that's your background. "Magic... By the Book" "The Squared Away Magician".. I don't know. But there's a lot of comedy that can come from a character that takes himself too seriously. There will other conventions but this will (hopefully) be your only wedding. My wife (24 years now) has ruined my life in many wonderful ways. |
