Here's another question for everyone. I am working on getting video shot for my promotional materials. Does anyone bother putting a fancy label on the DVD before sending it out? Would agents or companies be satisfied with a simple marker label on their copy? Personally I like everyone to be looking very nice. However, considering most people on these forums claim agents and party planners hardly have the time to read or watch all of the materials anyway, I wasn't sure if it was worth the bother. Thanks!

David,
That depends on the image you want to project. When I did my video, I ordered 4 color process silk screened blank DVDs. When sending out material to an agent, I would use my software to place their agency's name, address & phone on the title screen and as a tag to the demo. Imagine you are an agent and get a DVD with a name written in Sharpie, one with a label and one that was professionally printed. Which one would you assume is the higher quality act? It costs a bit more, but in my opinion, impressions are important. I also let them know that I am happy to provide additional DVD's as needed. Some take me up on that, others prefer files they can burn to a master so they can submit several acts. An important note, I don't send DVD's if they aren't requested. My videos are on-line. If someone wants to see me, they can check them out instantly. If they request a DVD - then I want to send something that makes them say "WOW!" Tom |

I wouldn't even consider sending a blank label with marker writing, this screams anything but professional. But most important is the performance on the DVD MUST be professional or top notch footage or it is all going to end up in the circular file after 20 seconds.

The video itself of course I would make sure is top notch. I'm not very experienced with mailing materials so I figured I'd ask. Especially since I've heard so much about agents simply glancing at materials. But then again it makes sense that if they only glance, the glance they do make should result in a good impression. Thanks again guys.

If you sent me one without a label, it will never be put in the machine to tell if it is good or bad work. Unfortunately we judge a book by the cover.
Think of it this way. I have to choose between two on my desk. One with a label and one without. I need to have a reason to choose which one I will put in. It is going to be my first contact with you at all. Many agents simply look at the video so they can see if they want to bother or not with the act. No need to read a bunch of stuff if the act is no good. Straight to the video saves time. SO if it is a choice as to which one I put in first, it will be the one with the label. Why start the race behind? You want to project a consistant imiage in EVERY aspect of your work. ESPECIALLY with agents as you will be projecting THEIR imiage when you work for them. It is important and can not be over stated. All that said, most times you send an electronic one anyhow, but if you do send one this way put a label on it. Also let me say, I am a very poor speller here on the Café´. It is because I simply don´t care. BUT if I send out anything business related, it is spellchecked and gramatically all in order. It should go without saying, but I get so many things that are not and it does reflect on you.
