I'm so thrilled to have made it to the semi's! I seriously wasn't much confident, since those judges have a history of being mean on magicians (I'm the 3rd one on the show's history to make it to the 2nd of 3 phases). Being the first one not to perform magic on the show was a shock to the production crew as well as to the judges, I guess that counted some points in favor, hah. The talk part is mostly a humor bit from the judges, with the bearded one joking about me being "...not suitable for any sanatory" and saying that "I would cr@p myself off if they put me into one of these [straitjackets]". I was kinda surprised when they told me to do within 1:40, as I was supposed to to within 2:00min, which would coreograph way better with the song. I kinda rushed it in the end, didn't want to risk. After the performance the Tamariz looka-a-like asks me what I would do on a sem-final, and I mentioned the Water Torture Cell. He says "That sounds enough for me". The girl says "You're very good at what you do... though I find it very disturbing to watch" / "It isn't that pleasant, but I'm curious!". The first judge on the left kept pushing the "Is it verifiable / are those restraints actually real?" button (That was cut off a bit on the editing), and the 3rd one (Last to approve) said "So... You're kinda n ym hands now... And what you claim is a difficult mission. You said you can make it, and now it will be the time to prove it". I'm really hapy about it, already rehearsing and arranging my 2nd performance. Since the show aired countless people have stopped me on the bus, subway and the streets commenting on how "scary" and "desperating" it was. I'm lovin' it! |

Hey Lynchini, thanks for the compliments!
Yesterday I headed to the studio to talk to the production crew and make up some extra details about my presentation. I'm planning to make my entrance by using a Shadow Box, but this is still up to be changed, since the stage is not really big and the tank, once on stage, cannot be moved. They do have an alternate plan for my entrance, though. Not as magical, but will be pretty fun and rockstar-ish, haha. We've been negotiating a lot about these details over the past three months, and much of my first idea (Which was to do do the escape vanishing from the tank and appearing at the audience, much on a Princess Tenko fashion) has been changed to suit technical needs of the show. The act itself wll need to be cut down to approximatedly 2 minutes (not enough for a water torture cell, IMO), and they want me to do it fully uncovered too. In one of the producer's words: "(sic) I've seen this trick many times. It is truly awesome, but the cloth cover somewhat cuts off the drama". So, this has made me not want to use my 'traditional' tank for obvious reasons (If you know what I mean). They actually built me a tank, which I've seen yesterday, it will suit me fine, but I must also say that it will be much of an experiment. I have performed uncovered escapes before, but on a pool setting and taking a little longer, not within a tank with a camera front-facing me and doing a 2-Minute challenge or so. Will be different, and different is fun! I do trust the show's crew on their decisisons, though. They have been really nice and accessible people from the very first time they invited me to perform the SJ Escape back in June. They are being really helpful and, being experienced TV insiders, they know what works best in terms of giving the audience what will hit 'em best. I'll be recording my act in a couple weeks. Until then, there is much to be done yet. |

Fabio!
Thank you for responding so quickly! Yes, I do understand what you are saying! As mentioned before, from a spectators point of view, your initial presentation, your appearance, the effect and the music combined was really awesome! I almost had the feeling I was actually seeing MM perform that escape! There was a time or two I saw a sleight grimace on your face, such as MM would have done, and the initial hand gesture coming up from the jacket looked cool too! As if it was clawing for freedom! I'm almost positive you synced it as so to the music!? Please keep us posted! Regards, Lynchini |

Thanks!
Yes, I did synch it to the music, haha. I'm actually used to perform the escape in around 2 minutes, which synchronizes WAY better. On the show they gave me 1:40, and I was quite anxious I wouldn't make it on time so in the end I rushed a little bit, but thankfully it came out alright. Here's a longer version of the escape: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HeIaWTH8Ur0 On the water tank escape I'm planning to cue it to the music too, since my time will be short again. Let's see what happens till then, heh. |

Oh, well.
The show is set to air November 15th, if memory serves me well (It will be the 4th Semifinal), and I'm not going to the finals. This year's season of the show featured a different kind of Semifinal, with so-called 'Duels' going on. There are Duels on Music (Female Singers, Male Singers, Children), Dance (Groups, Duos, etc) and only one was about Magic. It featured me against this 17y old korean: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6ON6rrPc-74 So, about my act. Like I previously mentioned, the production crew made me change A LOT of my first concept due to technical reasons (Time was very limited. I mean, VERY) and decisions from the Directors. That was pretty much okay. The recording was set to happen in two separated days. On the first I arrived at the studio at 7:00am only to find out that I would not be able to use my Shadow Box to enter the stage, for I would perform on an outdoor setting (That would also feature two other variety performers) and the angles would be very, very bad. It was around 04:00pm until I finally could do my rehearsal with their tank. Turns out that it did not have a lid as it was supposed to, so I could not stay underwater unless I had some extra weight on me. My crew and I tried over and over many different ways of making me stay submerged... And the director was rushing me big time. They needed to empty the tank so they could use the area for the other two performers to rehearse. Since I would ONLY do the escape, why didn't they put the tank on a different area in the first place?! We hadn't even solved the weight problem yet, but didn't take much long for one of the producers to come up with some weights that could fit me well. Or so I thought. I tested them briefly with those 15kg strapped to my belt. Only the weights, no chains. Time was short and the show director's pressure was on. Upon learning they would keep me undewater, I left the tank so they would stop rushing on me. I had about 1 hour to rehearse. The other two outdoor performers had at least 2. I took a shower, put dry clothes on and went back to the practice with my crew. Whe it was about time for me to perform everything seemed rather okay. 40min before my performance I was ready and set. Then one of the producers came and told me that a change of plans had ocurred and I was supposed to enter the stage with those weights strapped on my belt already. With my overall on I would look like Beyoncé or something, except far ridiculous instead of attractive! Long story short: after so many stressful hours and getting focused to do my thing, I was not in my best mood to argue. Luckily my manager was there with me and gave 'em an ultimatum: Either I entered the stage decently and had the weights strapped on my belt after the chains and padlocks were on, or we would leave. I was ready to give up on it, since I would look utterly dumb and flumsy. They accepted, after all the footage could be edited afterwards. The it started and...WAIT! wrong music! The sound operator apologized and played on the right song, which was for putting the chains on. Everything ran ok except that one of my assistants almost messed up, nothing serious and was quickly fixed. And then I was performing the escape. I had one minute, not a second further, to get rid of the chains. Quite easy, eh. Or so I thought. During the course of the escape one of the padlocks got stuck within the two pieces of velcro from one of those weights (The one on my back, precisely) and I couldn't get it off. I had to take a small leap and push the chain down so it would be forced to get out of the velcro. During so my head went out of the water for a fraction of second, which I believe was interpretated by the judges as if I ran out of air. Afterwards I explained the situation to the producers / directors so they could tell the jury that what happened was not my fault, but theirs. My best guess is that they did not, but oh well. Then they asked me if they could tape another take on the escape. I did so, doing it in 50-something seconds, and this time being way more careful with those stupid weights strapped to my waist. The director told me that they're going to edit it, so either my full 2nd attempt is aired or they will mix both this and partly the first one, since during the second none of the judges were at the place. One thing is certain (I hope so!): The part where the weight nearly ruined everything will not be aired. That was Day 1. On Day 2 I had to get my hair all wet to make it look like I had just finished my outfdoor performance to watch and comment in real-time my adversary's performance along the show's host, which was pretty fun. Then they showed part of my escape on the stage's big screen to the audience, whose response was great and I entered the stage so the 4 judges would vote on who they liked best. They complimented me for the difficulty and the "shock factor" of my performance, and the other guy for how funny and energetic he was. 2 Judges (The first one and Juan Tamariz' twin brother) voted for the korean, and then I knew I was beaten. When the 3rd judge was to vote (It felt like he was gonna vote on me) the Director interrupted and told him to pass the vote to the female judge first, who has long a history of preferring cuteish kids instead of shocking and bizarre performances. Can't blame on her! So, 3 Strikes. I was officialy out of the night's Top 3. WHat really made me mad about all the experience is knowing that I could have avoided a nearly fatal (performance-wise) mistake if only the producers had given me a decent time and environment to rehearse EVERYTHING as it was going to be performed. The competition was tough that night, with really good competitors, and I could have seriously leveled them all equally (On the judge's POV)had I performed seamlessly. Life goes on! It was a truly remarkable experience, and despite all those mishaps I know I did a nice job. I'll post the video as soon as the show airs. |

I bet it was an experience and a half for you! Yes, it is amazing how television production works these days! Film, edit, film, edit, by the time they are finished, you practically see a totally different presentation, then from what you first started out doing! Newspapers are the same way, they can totally blow the truth of the originally story waaaay out of proportion! You should feel proud of yourself for doing what you envisioned by bringing it to life! Please stay in touch!

Yeah, even though my performance didn't roll seamless (Thus ruining the judges' opinions on it), I'm happy I had a chance to "fix" it, so to say. After all, I'm motly doing it for the general audience. The responses from my first appearance on the show have been amazing, and likely with this one they will be too.
Maybe next year I'll bring a 'bigger' show. Let's see how everything goes 'til then. |

Your straight jacket escape was nice Sounds like quite an experience.
I also think there is a moral there... no matter how good the opportunity is its not worth compromising on safety equipment when doing anything with any actual danger in it. I also think these shows are looking to create drama any way they can, even at the expense of the performers. Ive heard a lot of negative stories ehre on the Café.
It is always darkest just before you are eaten by a grue.
