As many of you know, Tommaso pours a lot of thought in his explorations of any plot. His forays into the ACAAN plot are no exception and have for me at least been very satisfying approaches. In another thread there have been comments about Beyond Reloaded but, I felt this warranted a new thread for a very specific reason: I want to discuss why I would disagree with Tommaso that this effect is "easy to do." I hasten to add that this mini-act is EXCELLENT, but, this should NOT be an effect the neophyte should approach off the bat.
Mechanically speaking, Beyond Reloaded IS easy to do. There is ONE sleight that can be difficult, but, Tommy provides a work around for those not comfortable with the sleight(s) he mentions. The work around is "good", but, to really do the main routine justice, I think that the sleights Tommy prefers are perfect and the practitioner would do well to learn either of his suggestions. Now, the reason I say that the effect is not easy to do is that it requires strong audience management skills. Tommy works with the reader step by step of course, but, I believe that a familiarity with the component plot effects that make up the routine as a whole would greatly benefit the performer. You will be doing a divination, an open prediction, and both set the performer up for a very nice ACAAN. However, while Tommy's instructions are clear, we all know the attention spans of spectators, and this routine requires an attentive audience and it requires that the performer - in my opinion - really needs some sharp presentational and audience management skills. One part of the routine for instance, dealing with a number, can be very confusing to the audience and handled incorrectly could confuse rather than mystify. The approach may well signal mathematical method to the audience. While this is not the case in this particular part of the routine, the interpretation of a number to coincide with interpreting the card in the open prediction part of the routine can be precarious. I throw in a little red herring for cancellation purposes. In addition to the main three phase routine, Tommy offers totally impromptu approaches that are worthy of study and perhaps are pathway ideas. I would say the same for the main routine itself. Mem deck folks will enjoy Tommy's exploration of possibilities in one of the additional effects. The main routine I believe requires a sense of confidence that the raw neophyte will not yet have. The psychological underpinnings of the effect require more careful study, and the beginner in my opinion would again greatly benefit from familiarity of the three plots that make the routine plus comfort with the principal modus operandi. So, the routine and additional effects are as advertised in a broad manner. But, this is not a beginner's book, nor is it a casual routine to do at a pub. This will NOT work for the inebriated. This effect then is similar to Wesley James' Out of Sight Discernment in that you have to pick your spot. This is not a negative review. Far from it in fact. However, there seems to be a tendency among magicians to think ONLY terms of mechanical demands to judge difficulty of an effect. But, magic and mentalism happen in the spectator's minds ultimately, and the skill set of a performer AS performer is so very important. I think Tommy has done a splendid job, but, I also sense his exploration is far from complete and that too is a good thing. I look forward to future releases. A couple of comments about the feel and presentation of the e-book: Nicely done photographs illustrate the salient points very well. The text moves smoothly considering the fact that English is not Tommy's first language. So, those of you not conversant with the syntactical rules of order of a Romance language may have to go a bit more slowly at spots. The journey however IS worth it. Has Tommy achieved the "holy grail"? No, but, his work here and in earlier productions shows a continuous sense of evolution of thought. It is readily apparent that Tommy really puts a lot of thought into his work. Even more important is that the reader gets a sense that Tommy has put himself in the text and invites dialogue. I recommend Beyond Reloaded with the proviso that the beginner will be at a disadvantage. The book requires the reader to engage actively. This is a good thing as that is the purpose of any textual medium. One last thought to beginners that are going to want to try this: please study CAREFULLY. And PLEASE, do NOT present this as a "card trick." Nicely done Tommaso!! Con rispetto, Vlad |

Vlad thank you very much.
As I already explained, this is my way to perform Beyond ACAAN, maybe, as Vlad explained above, the routine is not for beginner, but nothing so impossible to learn in few time (Just to have to perform it to learn the correct manner to present it in order to control the audience correctly). About the sleights, I require just some little sleights that I believe you already know. Overall in my opinion after your learned this routine you will perform an hands-off ACAAN effect like the Ultimate ACAAN or something Beyond the Ultimate ACAAN, because you can ask just to think of a card and a number without their name any card or any number ever. Please correct me if I made a mistake. Thank you again Vlad. Bye, Tommy.

Hi Tommy,
I do not think you made a mistake at all. My thoughts were more philosophical in nature with regard to the amount of thought in the book. One sleight that you suggest is not a beginner's sleight, but, I also noted you did provide a work around. I still think however that the preferred sleight is MUCH cleaner. Ahimsa, Vlad |
