My sister who lives in California tells me there's a proposition to legalize pot--not just medical marijuana-- on the ballot.
1) Do you think it will pass? 2) Do you think it's a good idea? 3) do you think the feds will override the legalization if it gets voted in?

1) Probably not, at least according to the current polls, where it's trailing (though there are a lot of "undecideds").
2) Probably not, but then neither are tobacco cigarettes and alcohol. 3) The stricter statute always applies; I'm sure the Feds will continue to arrest people who violate the federal statute. |

California is a very odd state, drives me nuts. |

1) It won't pass
2) I think it's a good idea, on balance 3) I haven't read the statute, but I expect the gist is that it won't be a state crime; it will still be a federal crime, and the federal government will enforce it. See the Oregon case (Raich?) where they Supreme Court allowed the federal government's contorting itself like a pretzel to invoke the Commerce Clause to stick their noses in a MEDICAL marijuana (let alone recreational) case involving marijuana that was never bought, sold, or transported across state lines. And props to Thomas for a blistering dissent. Underlying some of these fights (believe it or not) is the abortion debate. The liberal unity on nationwide abortion rights is a factor in permitting the federal government to override contrary states' decisions on unrelated topics (and vice versa); the liberal justices don't want the conservative justices to use any "states have rights" finding to undermine the current abortion framework. That's why you had the liberals (+ Scalia, who "defected") arguing against medical marijuana, and the conservatives arguing for it, in Oregon.

It’s a bad idea from the CIA point of view, as they have a tax free business doing well at the moment. Since the intelligence community pull the strings that control the puppets in the government, by virtue of a leader can not control what his intelligence community tells or does not tell him, then of course it will not pass.

I think that Tommy's idea has a lot of merit. It is the CIA that are pulling the strings that undermine the puppets in our government. After a statement like that I think that our friend Tommy is smoking more than just cohibas over in England.

1) Do you think it will pass?
How's that expression go... "Land of Fruits and Nuts" of course it will pass. 2) Do you think it's a good idea? It's better than wasting billions on arrests, the courts, and petty incarcerations. The Smokers are going to do it anyway. 3) Do you think the feds will override the legalization if it gets voted in? As mentioned above, Federal law over-rides State law. Will they spend Billions to enforce these laws? I don't think so. 4) Is it Right? Only your conscience can answer that. I can imagine an audience going "WOW" over a TT routine. It opens a whole new colorful, musical sounding, type of 60's "Flower Power" Routine. California, the "1st Stoned State", has a nice ring to it.

Are they planning to actually legalise or just to some degree decriminalise?
I know in South Australia, the state with the most liberal drug laws here, they never actually legalised - they just set an amount that could be judged for personal use and only prosecuted above that amount. And I believe it was similar legislation in Holland - because United Nations agreements regarding drugs make it near impossible for any member country to actually legalise cannabis use. I only vaguely remember a Vanity Faire article I read about this maybe a decade ago. The article cited references which strongly suggested it was CIA pressure which led to these agreements decades ago - I wish I could remember but it was something to do with stopping left wing groups in Central and South America profiting from cannabis supply. |

In Pennsylvania if you are caught with a small bag in your car the police will confiscate it, and give you a disturbing the peace citatition. They are not enforceing the law here because it is unenforceable. It probibly won't pass in California, but the tide has definitely changed.

When I first moved here you could legally grow it for your own use, and you could legally buy the seeds from headshops. I thought it would be fun to grow a plane--not even to consume it, but just for the "hey ain't this plan cool?" factor.
But they changed the law within a few months of my moving her. Holland, too, has tightened up its laws. So I suppose that over here the general trend is going in the other direction. |

It should pass. It can make money. The Feds stopped bothering the clubs when Obama took office. I don't know about what it will do.. It's easier to buy that than booze for most kids. As an occasional smoker, I certainly think it is the gateway drug.
I think Alaska has made it pretty legal
