I'm using Word 2007, and I've just blown three hours trying to be able to read my old Word files.
Please help. Please. I'm going nuts over this. |

Old as in what version?
no compatibility mode? msword seems pretty eager to open anything.doc so something else is up.

Windows identifies the old files as "Microsoft Office Word 1997-2003 Document (.doc)"
I had no problem accessing the files until switching to Vista and Word 2007. The error messages are in German, so it probably wouldn't help most of the people here to help me, but the problem is the Registrierungsrichtlinieneinstellung. (And no, I'm not kidding.) "Registrierung" means "registry", "richtlinien" means "guidelines", and "einstellung" means "configuration". So the English Windows must have something like "Registry configuration guidelines" or something similar. |

Jon's right about Word opening up old files. I wonder if there's something in the program setup (or options) that either allows you to open old files or not.
And please give my best to your Registrierungsrichtlinieneinstellung.

HA!
If it helps, the error message links me to article 933850 at the Microsoft Knowledge base. I think that Registrierungsrichtlinieneinstellung means "Registry Policy Setting". My translation was way off. As usual. |

Hm. Microsoft fixed it. I went to the Microsoft Knowledge Base, switched my country to the United States, and the US version offered to fix it for me with something called "Microsoft Fixit", which is apparently not available in German.
I ran it and the problem was gone. Kind of creepy. |

This is cut and pasted from the web and not a full solution, but maybe good enough for what you need:
"I have similar problems. Word 2007 would not open any document, including .docx files, when I double click on them. This used to work just fine. The system is a clean install of Vista Ultimate with Office Ultimate. Word just opens without any document, not even a blank one. If I open Word 2007 first and then browse to the file location from File --> Open it will work just fine."

What's funny is if you Google "Registrierungsrichtlinieneinstellung", all you get are people trying to solve the same problem I was. So it's a word made up by Microsoft translators.
