I work on the streets and like to toss the rings on the ground for sound and effect.
and I travel and do a lot of canking because in my routine I don't use a key......tough to explain. anyway, I need some really really tuff rings, preferably 8" I used to use a set that was thin with a weild spot, which could be bounced off the ground with a spin, but over time the chrome would chip. I would like some strong solid rings any body have suggestions? |

Hi Jim
I don't do rings, so what do I know, but it sounds to me like you should be talking to a welder.

Jimmy, I know of no set of Linking Rings that would take that kind of punishment.
1st, they are chromed and that means it is a layer or coating of material on top of the steel. It is just like the old automobile bumpers, the chrome will flake when damaged. 2nd, most all today have some sign of the weld joint. I am speaking of the cheaper and medium priced rings. What you are looking for is Stainless Steel Rings that are solid. I think the only manufacturers that make this type or ring is Proline and Owen magic. The price for a full set of 8" Owen is $400 for a full set. That was in their 2005 price list, so I am sure the price has increased since then. Their price list does not show standard solid rings listed only the lite weight, so you would have to check if they still make solid rings. They list singles for $70.00 each but only in 10", again you would have to check if they are available in 8" solid. http://www.owenmagic.com If this is not what you are interested in, then just keep using the cheap $40.00 sets by Empire Magic/Loftus Novelty or Fun Inc. Another source would be Klamm Magic, he only has 10" and 12" chrome ring left for sale. http://www.klamm-magic.com According to his site he only sells singles in 12" at $18.00 each. |

I have a beautiful set of bronze rings that polish like gold -- but having someone make you some out of 1/4 brass rod should be fairly cheap for your 4-ring set. They might scratch with your useage but only add to their character. Tell people they were made for casks of rare brandy. They certainly won't look like the rings kids got in their Christmas magic set.

The Owen Magic Supreme rings are what I use. They will take a beating. No seams visible. Great sound. You'll never need another set. I use the 12 inch hollow stainless steel ones.

I can work with or without the weld spot because I have a routine and patter if it has the weld.
funsway, I would be super interested in a brass set of 4 (2 singles and 1 double). when you had yours made, what was the artesian called....blacksmith, fabricator....what? also I would like mine 8" but thicker then 1/4 inch anyway thank you fellahs for comming to my aid. I gotta street pal vetran whos uses owens exclusively, but has broken a few sets due to the street. another guy I heard gotta set of thick brass ones and I heard they are indistructable, but he had to go to a blacksmith. any way I am hoping to be guided to some one who makes em or will make em for me. |

I don't know where you live, but if you can find a race car fabrication shop I bet they could make you a set out of 4130 Chrome Moly (stainless steel). If you don't care the cost... contact joeporper@hotmail.com

As stated Proline and Ownen does custom work. You must call them. It will be expensive.
To have them made locally, contact tool and die shops in your area. You have to visit or call so they know you are seriously interested and not just shopping. I use to work in a steering wheel factory and we made steel rings for the insert in the steering wheel to be formed around. We made hollow steel and solid steel rings. The machine made or pulled the steel wire and curved it and cut it to length, the operator would place the ends of the ring in the welder and it would clamp - push together and well the ends automatically. The seam had to ground down in another process. Now most these operations have been moved to Mexico and Korea. You seem to be set on 8", I do not think you can get custom rings in that size without paying more then the price of a 12". Size will have nothing to do with price. If it so the rings will it fits in your bag, then you will have to pay extra for the rings to simply fit your carrying case. If you are bouncing rings on the concrete the brass would not lost very long. Brass will bend more easily and mark up and create spurrs that will cut up your hands. Being you only want 4 rings, I think you will have to go with the size (thickness) the company works with normally. Wire has to be purchased in large rolls of wire. This would be beyond a reasonable cost factor. |
